A message from Ronda:

"It has been a good winter . This year we are up to around 5500 blankets listed as distributed. We were prevented from distributing in several of the listed areas this winter due to service delivery protests accompanied by violence and police cordons. The KASvan was turned aside on a couple of occasions because of this, and on other occasions we simply never left the office for this reason. For safety, it is important for the volunteers to have reliable phones in case of emergencies especially in areas of unrest.

We are still distributing and will carry on doing so by rolling beanies and handwarmer sets inside blankets, tying with ribbon and attaching soft toys, so that the little ones do not have to be wrapped up in the heat. Daycare centres are more than happy to store blankets until next winter where necessary. "

Anneke, thank you for posting this message from Ronda.   Wonderful news that 5500 children are now being warmed and comforted by our blankets, hats, hand warmers and toys but dreadful to read that distributions have been prevented due to protests and violence, the safety of the KAS volunteers must always come first.

Hi Louise, I completely agree with you, safety first for the KAS volunteers.

The September 2017 Squares List is available on http://www.knit-a-square.com.

Click on "Received Squares".

171 parcels were received and opened and the total contents were:

14.158 squares (equal to 404 blankets), 808 hats, 102 pairs of handwarmers, 100 toys and many other goodies (marked with a "x" under column "Other" in the Squares list).

If there are any (typing) errors in the squares list regarding your name, city/state or country, please let me know and I will change it accordingly. Anneke

Hi Anneke, I sent my first parcel in early April. After reading some of your answers to other questions I realise that the information slip might not have been recorded by the new volunteers. Do you know if all of the completed blankets that are received in the post are photographed for the blanket room. There is no sign of it and it worries me that it might not have arrived safely.

Hi Marion, Unfortunately the small Team of Volunteers at KAS has no time enough to make photos of all blankets because  they are extremely busy opening parcels, sorting, preparing boxes with squares for the Gogos, administration and so on. To get an impression of how it works at KAS SA you should read - a kind recommendation only - Leanne Hunt's : "That Warm Fuzzy Feeling". As from the date I started reading this blog, I was very much aware of how it works in real life at the KAS office.

The blog of this very special lady gives a perfect impression of what is going on.The situation in SA a.o. is mentioned on page 14, and the report is from October 18th. Here is the link to the article: http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/topics/that-warm-fuzzy-feeling?id=3276523%3ATopic%3A776034&page=14#comments

Hope to have been of help.

Kind regards,

Anneke

We receive many, many squares from the Czech Republic, a.o. from Eva Adamkova and many others. Maybe Eva is leading a group of crafters which makes squares for KAS: "Sikovne ruce pomoci, z.s.".

Just by coincidence I saw that she has made a Facebook page in the Czech language, dedicated to Knit-a-Square! A.o. parts of the Squares Lists are uploaded on this page. Here is the link to the FB page:

Thank you so much Eva!

Hi Anneke, thank you very much for the link to the FB page. I don´t know Eva A. but she is from Hlučín /as I can see/ and it´s near by Opava. It´s nice to have a contact. "Šikovné ruce pomoci" means Handy helping hands and they knit/crochet not only for SA but also Romania and Ukraine.

Hi Karla, That's nice to hear, so good that you saw this message. Thank you for the translation, they do such good work! Maybe one day you can/will meet them because it is not far away from you? xo

A bit confused here - I have seen a photo of the teddies form Teddy Day that I organised in South Africa.  However, the list just says 2 parcels which are 70 squares from me..........

Rebecca, it can be confusing. The Squares List you are referring to, is for items received in October. The photo of the teddies will have been taken recently. This means they will be listed on the November Squares List.(available the middle of December.) Hope this helps !
