Square Circle Forum

well... i saw one of my squares!!!
how exciting to know that they arrived safely
we are a group of 13 knitters here in New Bedford MA and have sent 98 squares and 6 sweaters so far...
the factory i work in allowed us to have a 50/50 raffle to help with the shipping costs and from 120 people wer received $450.00 in 3 days
everyone is so excited about this charity - those that can't knit have been contributing yarn or $$ for our group to continue
love this charity and will continue to promote and teach for the cause!!

YAAAAY! Finally the Reply window has shown up. I've been trying for ages to reply to you. :) Your knitting group sounds wonderful, a great social time and supporting and encouraging each other to boot. Plus with your Spring weather being one storm after another, what better reason to get together warmly indoors with a cuppa and knit and chat eh? That's fabulous that you got so much money towards postage, what an incentive to keep those needles clicking! Way to go Jacqueline. Do you teach adults or kids or both?

whoever wants to learn
so far though it is mostly older women like myself
i think for the most part the younger crowds just aren't so interested in learning but they do contribute which is still all part of the whole dynamic of making it happen

I don't know about that, I'm 20 and I've been knitting for charities for three years. A friend of mine learned to knit specifically for knit a square, another friend had learned but has now picked it back up again for knit a square, and another friend of mine taught herself to crochet two years ago. I taught one of my classmates how to knit and whether or not she has carried on with it i'm not sure, but she was interested in learning. Anohter classmate of mine has been knitting for a few years as well.

I think that knitting/crocheting is becoming gradually more and more welcomed into the younger generations (we have a knitter here who has been knitting for four years, and shes 12. shes knitting faster than most knitters on KAS that I know of) and it is starting to become a skill looked at as worth having. I think that the younger people may surprise you yet with what they are willing to get their hands into, its just a slow progression to get knitting/crocheting into the younger generations world.
well that is awesome!! maybe i'm just not appealing to the younger persons in a way that is inviting. most of the younger people i come in contact with don't seem interested in learning but to attract them seems like the answer. maybe i'll display some of our squares in my office before i package them.?
That's a great idea. Another member, I believe it's Anne Powell, a fellow Canuck, said her granddaughter finds it easier to knit a 3-4 inch square and then she just knits around it to make it up to an 8 inch square. So maybe the youngest knitters would be encouraged if they only had to knit or crochet a smaller square that we can increase in size later. Anne said she's gotten some wonderful color combos on the squares by coordinating what she adds to her granddaughter's original square. One member here has 55 people, students, parents and teachers, knitting for KAS and says they will start up again when school resumes in the fall. :)

There will always be young people though to whom knitting or crochet doesn't appeal....maybe you'll be lucky enough to run across some that want to help. :)
thanks for the idea - that just may work out to be the answer

i have an 86 year old woman who has contributed to our group. she has been told by her doctor to keep on knitting more as a therapy for her mind and spirit. when she heard of our group she immediately knew what she would be doing with her therapeutic knitting projects so that might be another source to tap. if we go to nursing homes and give a reason and some supplies i'll bet those that we able would jump at the chance to help.

also - just i speaking to people about this it is catching. a friend of mine owns a restaurant and is too bust to knit anymore but she brought me a bag of odds and ends that are making for some interesting squares. we're very fortunate here to have many generous people and another woman i work with does not knit but quilts and donated four baby size quilted blankets.
