Hi I would like to share this pattern for a 8" square that is sure to work each time no matter what size needles or wool weight.
Cast on 3st
knit in garter st , increase at the beginning of each row until side measures 8" or 21cm
Decrease at the beginning of each row to 3st
Slip 1, knit 2 together, pass the slipped st over and pull through yarn to complete square. Hope this helps

Permalink Reply by Christine Johnson on February 25, 2012 at 12:58am Jane, they can tend to look a bit diamond-shaped and lopsided but they pull into squares when joined to others. If I make diagonals I usually do the increases in the second or third stitch of each row rather than the first because I prefer the neater edge.
