Square Circle Forum

My name is Alison Lett and I have 4 daughters the eldest is 20 and the youngest just 4.  I live in a tiny hamlet overlooking Cessford Castle in the Scottish Borders.

While being snowed in over Xmas and New Year I came acrosss the KAS website and have not stopped knitting since.  I used to start knitting projects and soon get bored with them, but knitting for KAS is different.  When i start on a new project i just don't want to stop!

Beware as you are going to hear alot from me.  I am really passionate about KAS it is a wonderful charity which you do not need to be mega rich to get involved with.  Our family is on very limited means but i am determined to do whatever i can to make a differance even if it may just be in a small way.

I have just started a KAS Knitting circle once a week in our nearest town.  We may only have 4 members at the moment including myself but i have great hopes for the group.  One member has already whiped up 3 hats and a square and the local paper placed a free ad for me this week so fingers crossed we shall be soon on our way.

Allison, Welcome to the KAS! Sounds like you'll have a little knitting group in no time at all and it's just wonderful that they put an ad in the newspaper for you! I'm sure you'll have a large knitting group in no time at all! Congratulations and great work you're accomplishing for the wonderful charity. I love your home and the picture of the children! Keep up the great work you're doing and if you have any questions the members are here all the time to answer anything you need to know. I know because I'm not a real experienced knitter but I'm getting better due to this group of wonderful people from all over the world!!
Thanks for starting your blog, Alison

I was so excited to hear you have started a group - that's how all of this is going to keep growing. If you get these ladies churning out heaps of stuff, you may eventually want to look for help with postage. I have a bunch of knitters doing squares for me - I think the last batch we sent was over 600 and I will soon be sending of another huge shipment of squares, G-O's and stuff. I cannot afford to pay the postage for all this and neither can my knitters who are mostly seniors. I had great luck in appraoching my church - went looking for about $300 to send the first 19 boxes... ended up with enough $$ to pay all our postage for a full year.

Be glad to share how I did it if you ever need help
Thanks Ann, I sure will be looking for ideas along the line for raising postage funds etc.. Its an idea in the pipeline but i should like to hold a coffee morning with an awareness stand and a raffle, tombola etc, when i get a few more knitters involved its somthing i can start thinking about.
My ultimate aim when my youngest starts school is to start a KAS circle in each of our local towns so there is a group meeting somewhere in the borders each day. Its very rural here and it would give some of the people that do not drive a chance to join in.
You are amazing, Alison - a true KASer!
Well it was our second meeting of our Knit A Square Circle and we had 3 new members! I was so pleased to see them. We now have a grand total of 7 members and for week 2 i don't think thats too bad! One lady had even knitted a bundle of 8"squares ready to bring along. Everyone is so enthusiastic i can't wait until next week.
Alison - that is brilliant news! Well done!!
Congratulations Alison, you must be so pleased with such an early and positive response.

Well we have now had 4 meetings and everyone has been working so hard doing squares and hats i have 3 packages posted for February so am pleased that the group is turning into a success. We still have just 7 regular members but it is early days and i have a couple of ladies knitting for us even though they cannot attend meetings and also two local craft groups knitting also for us.
To raise some much needed funds for postage we are holding a Daffodil tea with hopefully a grand raffle to bring in some extra cash. I am in the process of contacting local businesses to see if they would mind donating a prize, so fingers crossed.
well done on projects completed so far
good luck with the fund-raising.
nice to see the group
