Square Circle Forum

Hi everyone

I've opened up this category because I'd love to get that buzzy, chatty, fun feeling back in 2010. We have such a wonderful group of people in our KAS community and it's always fantastic to hear from everyone, whether it's to do with KAS, the children, ideas, or just fun stories about what's happening in your lives.

We've just hit over 750 member, which is brilliant! Therefore I hope that we'll all get to chat throughout the year and get to know one another better. It's February already so let's get chatting.

Grab a cup of tea, coffee (or even a sneaky wine!) and tell us about yourself, we're waiting to hear...

I'm off to grab a cuppa x x x

Hi, Kalai. I guess I will be the first one! I am Jana in Saudi Arabia. Last year I had my class make squares, after I taught them to crochet. I just passed out supplies yesterday to my NEW class (12 girls and 3 boys!) and I will start teaching them to crochet on Saturday. Their first project will be squares for the circle! We also began an "Exploratory Program" on Tuesday. Each teacher has some activity that we are teaching/doing with the kids in the school. I have, naturally, a crochet club! FIVE of my students from last year, including one boy, Gian, joined the club along with two 7th grade girls! The kids asked if they could make squares again for SC! I said of course! Gian is an awesome little boy! Not only has he taken off with crochet, but he has taught himself (with the help of You Tube!) to knit! He is my assistant for the club! Although I called him my "apprentice" on Tuesday! LOL! The program will run, during school hours (each Tuesday from 11 to 1:10) until the end of March. I have a feeling that some or all of these kids will want to keep going past that time after school! They all live on the compound, so this should be possible.
Great idea to have this chat! Keep it up!
Jana

Hi Jana

Yes! I remember you and your class. How wonderful that it is continuing this year and that you even have an 'apprentice' to help you. He shall be a champion knitter/crocheter in no time whatsoever I'm sure.

It is so wonderful to have the kids get involved. Have you been in touch with my sister Cressida by any chance? She's in charge of the KasKids program which is all to do with schools. Perhaps you'd like to be in contact? Let me know what you think.

So tell me about Saudi Arabia? Have you always lived there? I'd love to visit Saudi Arabia one day...

P.S. Thanks for responding so quickly!!

I too remember the pics of your class Jana and their great productivity. It's lovely to hear of your plans for this year and your new assistant. Boys and men knitting goes back centuries, Gian is following in the footsteps of many men.

I am going to the chiropractor tomorrow despite him not exactly being the most modern, but he's all we've got here. I have managed to bonk myself on the head hard twice in the past two months so must get straightened out somehow, even if just abit.

Our mid winter thaw, where temps went up around 0C/32F for two weeks has now gone. We've had several days of -39 windchills, winter is back. I was trying to do crochet tonight but after just a few stitches my arms got weak and everything hurts. It's so infuriating and depressing but I won't give up on completing that Go-Over. I'm sure there will be better nights when it won't be so impossible. I gave up and did abit of dancing...can't do much but it's better than no exercise at all. And the deer are still coming into town. They did all last Summer and Spring and Fall too. Guess there's slim pickings out in the bush.

You're right Jeanne, about men and boys knitting that is. Not to mention that they look so cute when they do it!

I knew about one bonk on the head (freezer door I think) but not the other. I hope your chiro fixes you up. I love my chiro, she's the best, wish I could see her every day...

Are you weak and in pain because of the temperature or is it the bonks on the head? Dancing should cheer you up a bit. Speaking of no exercise I haven't done anything for nearly five months! I have no excuse (although it is a bit warm at the moment) but I just hate it. Hate it, hate it. It's one of the worst chores in my life hence the lack of it. You are doing better than me. Maybe I should start clubbing again, then at least I'd get a dance in every now and again (but oh no thank you... clubbing ugghhh!)

I'd love to see your deer, they sound beautiful x x x

Oh the other bonk was me upright one minute and on the floor the next due to somebody leaving something on the floor and I didn't see it, my ankle wrenched and down I went, ending up sitting against the wall kinda. Apparently I smacked my head hard on the wall as I went down, so my daughter said. I was checking for broken bones so I didn't notice, lol. One good thing to be thankful for, I'd already sprained that ankle years ago, so there were no tendons or ligaments left to mess up. I just pulled some muscles and was able to get around just fine right away, with care. But two bonks mean my spine is even more pretzely than usual, lol. The arm weakness is soley from the nerves in the base of the neck being pinched.

As for dancing, I put on a bunch of dance tunes by Michael Jackson and did what I could. The cat thought I was nuts and kept staring at me. I've never gotten a high or buzz off of exercise so it has to be something I enjoy to begin with, like dancing. I can't do much but abit here and there adds up. And gives the cat something to watch, lol. A book on folk medicine said there's two types of metabolisms, one type gets that high or buzz or rush off of exercise, the other type of people get a buzz or rush off of watching a good movie, listening to music, seeing a play etc. That's me, type 2! Maybe you are too. My hubby is type 1 and doesn't understand how I can get all over shivers from a superb piece of music, get a high off of it. I can get excited over a good book too, enjoy discussing it or a film or play for ages, it's so much fun. My daughter who lives with us is the same way. He watches us yapping up a storm, totally puzzled, lol.

Clubbing-after my daughter going to one and describing how it gave her a severe headache, it was so loud, so she left after an hour, I have no desire to go. Hearing loss anyone? No thanks. Yeah the deer are beautiful. Google White Tailed Deer and you should find photos of them. Very peaceful lovely creatures, though you do have to give them their space, those hooves are sharp.

Please be sure to notice if you have any changes that could be due to banging your head - struggling (more than usual) to come up with a word or to think about how to do something, dropping things because of mis-judging distances, etc. Your local brain injury association would be able to help.
A lady who lives near me banged her head when she fell - and she cannot knit any longer, because she is not able to remember the movements required to knit or purl a stitch, for example. Those movements were automatic to her as she had been knitting for over 60 years, so it has been quite a shock!
All the best, Janey

Thanks Janey. That is indeed something to remember. I have some of those symptoms now and have had for years, decades, due to ongoing health issues but any extra ones I am sure I will notice. Thanks for the heads up, it gives me another thing to watch for. I know damage from bonks on the head is cumulative. Like I needed any more help in not thinking straight? LOL Ah well....as you say, MORE that usual. So far so good, just the usual Fibro brain fog, let's just say it makes life interesting!

Love, Jeanne :)

Jeepers Jeanne, you need to be careful! Or tell people not to leave things where you are likely to fall and bonk yourself. You poor thing, sounds like you've been in the wars. I hope your chiro sorts you out sooner rather than later.

I love the idea of your cat watching you dancing away to some Mickey J. I always feel sad when I think of him (even before he passed away) such a troubled life... Love his music though and that would be one of my first choices to dance to too. I am most definitely a type 2 person. No doubt whatsoever. Books, movies, beautiful beaches etc!

Yes my clubbing days are LONG over. I somehow found myself in a nightclub with some mates not so long ago (went in thinking it was a bar) and I was out of there before you could say Jack Robinson. Not my scene at all, much prefer something more intimate and to be able to hear myself think. I suppose that's what getting older does though hey?!?

This is fun, got lots of chats to answer! Have a great day Jeanne x x x

Yes I went to my chiro and feel much much better. He really straightened some stuff around. He's the kind you go to when you have symptoms and he sees to fixing it. So that's okay. I'd prefer preemptive, proactive, restore your health stuff but that clinic is four hours drive from here, one way. Kinda negates the treatment to drive 4 hours, get a 5 minute visit and drive 4 back. So I'm glad at least he's here and I can get unkinked regularly. :)

Glad to hear it Jeanne! Yes an eight hour drive would more than likely do more damage I imagine!
