Square Circle Forum

Welcome, everyone, to the August 2015 theme!

I'm excited to be hosting for the first time.

Do you have any of these colours in your stash?

You do? Then you can begin a square for this theme immediately!

This month we are focusing on the international community of KAS.

Squares are sent from all over the world and are joined together, with love, to warm hundreds of children.

The August theme will explore the different flags of the countries across the world.

Most of the flags use bold, plain colours and simple, straight-line stripes.

This theme provides something for everyone!

Those of you who love to make our 'backbone' square - the Plain Jane - can delight in the bright, crayon-box colours, whilst those of you who really love a challenge could get your creative juices running around some of the more complex flags, such as Swaziland or Sri Lanka!

Many flags are blocks of straight-line stripes - ideal for either knitters or crocheters.

Here are each continent's flags in more detail:

We last completed this theme/challenge back in April 2012 and KASers came up with some amazing squares - both those which were direct representations of flags and those which were inspired by the colours. Here's a selection from back then:

I thought we'd have a mini-challenge running within this theme.

I also thought that it would be interesting to see how many countries are represented through the contributions of forum members to this discussion - watch this space for more details!

The flag of Canada

Our flag was inaugurated on February 15, 1965, at an official ceremony held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Since 1995, February 15 has been commemorated as National Flag of Canada Day in Canada.

A SALUTE TO SOME OF CANADA’S FIRST NATIONS PEOPLES who are distinct nations within our society

 FLAGS OF THE METIS NATION

The Metis flag is the oldest in Canada. In Canada, the Métis, are defined as Aboriginal people. The Métis people are the modern descendants of Indigenous women in Canada and the colonial-era French, Scotish and English trappers and fur traders they married.

.The Metis actually had two flags - the red was the colour of the Hudson Bay company (British) and the North-West company (French).  The infinity symbol represents the joining of two distinct cultures, European and native, and the immortality of the Metis Nation.

FLAG OF THE IROQUOIS CONFEDERACY

Also know as the SIX NATIONS PEOPLE the confederacy is comprised of the Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora nations.

 FLAG OF THE ANISHINAABE NATION

This Nation is comprised of the Odawa, Ojibwa and Algonquin indigenous people. The thunderbird on the flag is the symbol of the Anishinaabe Nation.

FLAG OF THE INUIT NATION

Also the flag of Nunavut Territory where these indigenous people live. The inukshuk, which divides the flag, is a traditional stone monument used to guide travellers and to mark sacred sites.

I thought I would start with South Africa

II'm starting this challenge by tackling the flags of some of the countries closest to South Africa.

Here are Lesotho and Madagascar.

Gabon, on Africa's west coast

I'm still journeying in Africa, this time Guinea, also on the west coast, further north.
