Square Circle Forum

Hi everyone

These are some comments from Ronda regarding what they really want in South Africa. Please read!

  1. We LOVE the brightly coloured squares – especially after the Peter Lovemore challenge! After all,
everyone likes colour !  The more luminous and bright, the better.

  1. Please, a LONG break on the teeny stuff … if people are kindly making beanies, jerseys, slipovers, go-overs, sweaters – sizes 3-10 yrs are the most
needed.  And it might help to bear in mind that once a child is 2
years old, his head is almost adult in size, so medium and large beanies
are the best.  We do have a LARGE stock of beanies at the moment but
take supplies to EVERY distribution !

  1. Sorry to keep saying this, but PLEASE no more square vests specially the tiny ones –  instead can we have slipover's? patterns with longer shape – THANKS SO MUCH !!

  1. For the teeny ones, the KAScuddles are great

  1. And SOFT TOYS – these are going down an absolute TREAT and we are now taking 40 or 50 to every crèche distribution.  Most of our little ones have
never had their own toy and quite obviously delight in receiving them
because they compare and giggle and discuss and interact with them SO
beautifully it’s gorgeous !!  I am going to send an email to as many
friends as possible and make a collection of second hand soft toys locally,
to give our stocks a needed boost.  (I have about 8 LARGE soft toys
here, waiting for another 35 or so before being able to distribute, but on
the whole the medium size or even quite small soft toys are great).

Thanks so much for the update!! It's always nice to know what is needed.
You might post this in the "KAS Wish List" category on the forum too; that's where I would be looking for an update on what is needed =).
Thanks Rachel, I have moved the discussion to the Wishlist category. Not thinking this afternoon!
Thank you for posting this information Kalai! There are 10 soft toys in the mail from me at this moment (if they haven't already arrived) and I have 5 more here ready to send off.
I haven't had time to make squares for a while, but will get back to them after the crafts fair coming up on Sunday. I try to use lots of bright colors..

Ronda's wish will no doubt be fulfilled when the October challenge goods arrive - there will be lots and lots of toys. Personally, I don't need much encouragement to buy soft toys in charity shops.
Ten teddy bears are in the mail in the church boxes for this month. Ronda should have them in a few days.
Thanks Kalai, it's always good to have a reminder of what we should be making and sending. And yes, I love shopping for stuffed toys too !!
cordelia has an overload of small soft toys that sit in a basket, completely untouched. i'm sure we can share some.
Wonderful Kyla, you're already teaching Cordelia a fabulous life lesson!
I'm so glad to hear that bright squares are needed as I couldn't resist buying two skeins of incredibly bright orange yarn!

I'm going to print off this list from Ronda, as my swiss-cheese brain (lots of "holes") won't remember otherwise. Do thank her for this update. I am currently working on two of the longer slip-overs and am encouraged that they want larger hats as I seem to do best at making the larger ones, ones that almost fit me. Just finished one last night in fact and was hoping it wouldn't be too big. Now I can rest easy on that count.

Thanks again for the encouragement! I've also sent some toys but think I'll crochet up some "skinny" ones so I can fit more in. :D

I made a square vest before I found out that I shouldn't make one anymore. Can I still send it? And if you don't want any square vests, why not just take the pattern down on the Knit-a-Square website?
Dawson the square vest can always be lengthened, for example by putting 3-4 inches of ribbing on it around the waistline. That is all that is needed to make the vest long enough to go over a child's tummy! :) In crochet one could also just do a row or two of shells...I believe I've recently mentioned on the square vest pattern to please make them just 3-4 inches longer so they don't ride up over the children's tummies but I'll go double check. If one wants to make them longer, say 5 inches, that gives even more warmth to the child. :D And thanks for making a garment for one of the orphans, bless your caring heart. :D

This is the new title for the knitted Square Vest Pattern on site:
Mary Lokken’s Knit-a-Square Ribbed Square Vest-please make them 3-5" longer now!
Thanks for mentioning the ribbed square vest pattern I wrote, Jeanne!

Here's a link to the pattern:
