Square Circle Forum

Hi everyone

These are some comments from Ronda regarding what they really want in South Africa. Please read!

  1. We LOVE the brightly coloured squares – especially after the Peter Lovemore challenge! After all,
everyone likes colour !  The more luminous and bright, the better.

  1. Please, a LONG break on the teeny stuff … if people are kindly making beanies, jerseys, slipovers, go-overs, sweaters – sizes 3-10 yrs are the most
needed.  And it might help to bear in mind that once a child is 2
years old, his head is almost adult in size, so medium and large beanies
are the best.  We do have a LARGE stock of beanies at the moment but
take supplies to EVERY distribution !

  1. Sorry to keep saying this, but PLEASE no more square vests specially the tiny ones –  instead can we have slipover's? patterns with longer shape – THANKS SO MUCH !!

  1. For the teeny ones, the KAScuddles are great

  1. And SOFT TOYS – these are going down an absolute TREAT and we are now taking 40 or 50 to every crèche distribution.  Most of our little ones have
never had their own toy and quite obviously delight in receiving them
because they compare and giggle and discuss and interact with them SO
beautifully it’s gorgeous !!  I am going to send an email to as many
friends as possible and make a collection of second hand soft toys locally,
to give our stocks a needed boost.  (I have about 8 LARGE soft toys
here, waiting for another 35 or so before being able to distribute, but on
the whole the medium size or even quite small soft toys are great).

I bought a skein of bright orange yarn and decided it was too thin to use...........but I also have some hot pink thin-ish
yarn..........I put the two together and double-crocheted a square..............Wow! Really "luminous" just as Ronda is
asking for.
This sounds like a glorious colour combo Helen!
I'm doing a square in florescent green! I couldn't resist buying a ball today!
I agree Sue, this sounds super. Way to go Helen! You never know what you'll get when you try mixing colors. :)
i am sending 6 soft toys.
Gelareh they will be adored. The kids literally have nothing. A toy is a dream to them, even something they don't even dream about. To get a toy is a wonder, a delight and a thrill for them. Thanks so much for sending them!
Despite a vociferous argument between me and my daughters over what color the yarn actually IS, I've made 3 very bright squares so far out of some orange yarn. They swear it's bright salmon pink. My sister-in-law says it's coral so I guess that's a compromise. To me it's orange! Nobody is backing down, lol. At least it'll be bright. I got two skeins in the "mill ends" section at Walmart and it's really soft and nice to work with, better than some of the yarn on sale regular price. I could even make a slip-over out of it but I know they want lots of squares so I'll keep going on that. I actually made a round and round Granny that didn't turn out warped. I had to keep counting the sides and sometimes ripping out to correct it but at least it LOOKS like a Granny Square, lol! And this is certainly a bright cheery yarn. :D Helen solved the "what color is it?" conundrum by using pink and orange yarn together. Good idea for next time, lol.

I hope this week to go "on safari" in the dollar stores and at Wallyworld to find more small stuffed animals. It'll soon be "Stuff a Cruiser" time here. The police park two of their police vans outside Walmart with the hatchbacks open and as you leave the store you give them purchased toys of all types which they give to the local poor kids. I think it's great. I want to find those Harry Potter Lego sets that you first build and then can play a game with, they're less money than the big play sets and they were one of the best value toys featured on CNN recently. I figure the poorer kids deserve quality toys and I can't afford more than one or two but at least I can do that eh? I get a thrill out of getting toys for kids, locally or in South Africa. :D
i have been given some beautifully knitted cardigans - all baby size. I assume that Ronda will want them at some time? I can happily put them at the bottom of the KAS treasure chest until they are needed. The "treasure chest" is a big oak chest - probably 200-300 years old - that was left in our house as too big and heavy to get down the stairs - it was here when the last people moved in so goodness knows how long it has been here! It now earns its keep by storing all the squares and KAS stuff until I can post them.
Well Pam, the squares you put into that monster wooden chest is the best treasure it will ever hold!
