Square Circle Forum

It is unfortunately not well known that December 1st is world AIDS day and AIDS awareness. This is day when the red ribbons come out and make an appearance to remember and honor those who are HIV/AIDS positive and living with the effects every day of their lives, all around the world, and those who aren't anymore.

South Africa is the AIDS capital of the world. It has by far the most and some of the worst cases of AIDS the world has ever seen.

We would like to take December 1st, AIDS awareness day, and make it the KasCare AIDS awareness month. Starting on the first of December and carrying through the entire month, the challenge for you is to make 'Plain Jane' and simple AIDS awareness squares.

because of the possibility of prejudice and harm coming to the children, we will not be making squares with the red ribbon motif on them. while the red ribbon is a safe, culturally acceptable symbol western society, it would seem that it is a stigma and certainly less acceptable in South African culture.

***we do not want to advertise that these children have AIDS, do not make red AIDS ribbon squares.***

stick to 'plain jane' red squares, red hearts, red stripes, and anything else you can think of.

And of course the color that is recognized worldwide is the bright, vivd red.

We are also going to ask you to get friends and family to contribute as well, either by asking them to knit a few red squares or asking them to sponsor a few red squares. consider the fact that is is coming up on the holiday season, and perhaps you would be able to ask friends and family to make a donation to the site this year instead of buying material gifts. every cent that is donated will be used to get those squares to the children.

comment with the number of squares that have been completed as well as the number of squares that were sponsored with donations, and I will add you to the KasCare AIDS awareness month list.

total - 269 red squares

Kyla - 7 squares
Jen phillips - 6 squares

I could see a bright red square with a white heart chain stitched over top of it working well. Or a red square with the heart done in the stitch in popcorns (crocheted), even a graphed red ribbon on another color. I know I've got red yarn around that I can use for this. Plain red squares sounds good too. I can't wait to see what the brilliantly creative KAS minds around here come up with. I know they're going to blow me away. Personally I think I'll do plain ones, keep my already Christmas cluttered brain in low gear, lol.
somebody should make that one, it would be neat to see what it turns out like.
Hello Anne,

Are you able to explain the abbreviations on this pattern. I'd like to try a scaled up version of this? Or is there anyone else out there who could write out the instructions in full? Thanks for posting this, Anne. I've never mastered cables and this is an excellent opportuniy to tackle them.
Thanks very much for this Anne. I've copied all this down. Now to go through the stash to find some red.
Anyone doing Tunisian or afghan stitch in crochet could do this stitch chart too, just put in two crochet stitches in a different pattern or color where the ribbon is. Or if doing a plain crochet square then do puff stitches for the ribbon areas so they would stand out. Or you could crochet a long strip of 2 rows single crochet then applique that, in the ribbon shape, atop the square, like doing initialled squares. Just a thought...
Excellent idea for December. We have lots of red and I like Jeanne's idea of hearts on a red background.
ok, so let me see if i get it right , is either a red square or the simbol for AIDS awarness? what is (plane jane)
Hi Michelle. :) "Plain Jane" is our KAS term for a simple knitted or crocheted square all in one colour, the so necessary solid blocks of colour used in the blankets to such great effect. We are suggesting either solid red squares, or a square with the red ribbon incorporated into it somehow. I imagine there are other ways to get the colour red across, certainly a red heart added into a white or other coloured square or a red heart appliqued atop a square would work I think, eh Kyla?
I've left it wide open for all the creativity out there. you can do red stripes, red hearts, a red block square, a red ribbon square, or something else i havent even though of. I didnt want to say "we want only these patterns" becuase how should i know that there isnt some other better pattern that i haven't come across yet? it is entirely up to you.

the only real criteria is that please don't spend a great deal of time and effort on two absolutely beautiful and stunning squares - keep them simple so that you can make more squares in a short amount of time, instead of less squares that are more complicated.
Hello Michelle, it is a red square, or a mostly red square, but because of the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS in South Africa we are not encouraging the use of the Red Ribbon symbol. Using red ribbon in the square as Andrea has suggested is fine as it is different to the acutal symbol. I think this challenge is more in honour of our awareness of how this disease has affected the children. Hope that helps.
I have LOTS of red yarn for this one! Did you know you can also crochet with ribbon? Or you could weave actual ribbon through the square in the shape of the AIDS ribbon. :o)
Now that's a clever idea - weaving the ribbon through the knit or crochet square!
