Square Circle Forum

I wonder if there would be a benefit to making occasional 16x16" squares? I understand that the problem with strips of squares is that they don't necessarily stretch in the right ways like individual squares do, but I wonder if 'mega-squares' made in a single piece (with the same shape/size as four 8x8" squares stitched together) might minimize that placement/stretching problem at the same time as saving on sewing effort at the other end?

Erica - large squares would save some sewing at the other end for sure, but the problem, as I see it, is that all squares arriving are 8". These are stacked and made up into "blanket packs" to be distributed to the various groups sewing them together.

If we start sending "off size" squares it will add to the difficulty of sorting squares, and might make Ronda's job even more difficult.

It is a good idea though, but perhaps one we should consider a bit later when Ronda has more help with the sorting and more space to store these larger squares until there are enough for several blankets.
I hope I didn't do a 'boo boo'... I did make some 16 x 16 wool squares, using some donated wool. I questioned myself at the time, but then I saw that it folded into the same size as 4 separate 8" squares, and I thought it could work. I'll keep from doing that again until I read an update on this thread.
Hello Erica, thanks for your consideration.

The sewing isn't the area at this point that we are having trouble with. As you know it's the unpacking, sorting and bundling that is the issue at the moment. Another reason that we don't encourage different size squares is that it is another process on top of the processes that we already have. It means separate piles for the bigger squares, and confusing the general process. Hopefully when we have more resources people can send 16 inch squares if they wish but at this point we'd prefer to keep it simple.

Great idea though, thanks Erica!
