FEBRUARY/ MARCH CHALLENGE - Keeping Older Children Warm

Cold weather will be arriving in South Africa in May/June and during the cold months there is a huge need for warm garments for the older children (ages 4-14) to wear during the day, and perhaps even sleep in at night.

Last year, at Ronda’s request, we developed a pattern for an bulky, roomy outer garment which could be worn over whatever other clothes a child owns.  We christened this the “GO-OVER” for obvious reasons.  This is a simple-to-make item - if you can make a square, you can make one of these! The time involved in making one of these, equates to the time required to make 16 squares.

Information and instructions can be found in the forum category Patterns - GO-OVERS,  for two sizes - one to fit children 4-6 and one to fit children 8-14.  Check out the Featured Album in the photo section entitled GO-OVER VARIATIONS to see some of the amazing G-O’s already made.

Since the need is great, and the time to make a GO-OVER might seem long for some, this challenge will extend to the end of March. For others, these G-O’s work up quickly and hopefully you will be moved to make several.

The other great need for our older children is warm hats.  We have several very easy hat patterns posted in the forum under Patterns - hats, including a recent contribution -  Alison’s One Evening Hat (which it is - I’ve tried it!)

Kyla has challenged us to our own “Knitting Olympics” during the week of the Olympics - see her discussion KASmpics winter games -  whether you make squares, hats or a GO-OVER during that week it will all be “gold medal” But that is just a small part of our February/March Challenge to “Keep an Older Child Warm”.

We have not set a ‘numbers’ goal for G-O’s and large hats - let’s just go for broke and try to set a record for larger size items for the next two months.

Please report them in this discussion, and we will keep a tally posted here.

Our totals for February were  GO-OVERS - 45

you done them already, Anne?

xx
Well Enid - I knew from the calendar that this challenge was coming - so I have been concentrating on the G-O's and stockpiling. Mailing by Feb/March should get them to SA just in time for the cold season.
Anne! you made it I know you wanted to make nine and you've done ten!! Plus hats! What a goer! I'm sticking to squares at the moment [18 so far] although I posted 4 Go Overs in early January made last year. I didn't put them in the tally as I had a genuine 2010 parcel as well. Our library is selling children's books for 50c so I couldn't let that go by. Now my problem is posting them !! Hide them under squares??I'll have to do some more knitting!
Two more on the go - should be done by next week. I confess some of the hats are "cheater hats" and some were added to my stash by my daughter who visited a 'made by hand' craft show - but they are all hats and will keep heads warm.
Will send my February Go-Over on Monday. So, 1 done by me.
Way to go Laurie, I'm still valiantly finishing mine from last year. :$
me too, Jeanne, me too !!
I commented under the photo - it's beautiful!! will move it into our Album.... thanks Laurie
Hi Anne
Have ready to post tomorrow
13 hats size 4 - 14
1 go-over
Wow Alison - that's terrific - thanks for all your work
i would love to try to make a go over for older children. im just having a little trouble with the crochet pattern. it has 8 ten inch squares and it also uses squares for the sleeves? it said something about doing them completely but i still cant get it ha ha im sorry im more like an (easy) crochet level but i would definetly like to try it out so the kids have something for this winter
I am just starting to crochet and to keep the go-over as simple as possible i am just making 4 squares each for front and back and 4 squares for each arm and sewing them up. It is an awful lot quicker to make in one piece as i did when knitting one but the crochet i just want to keep simple!
Just remember that even if the go-over is a little smaller or larger not to worry as it will fit someone and will much appreciated. as long as your squares are all the same size you will be fine. As soon as you get started it will become clearer and you will enjoy making it.
