Square Circle Forum

Hi everyone!  Here's our idea for the September challenge, courtesy of Jeanne:

"Fruit colored hats", that would include reds for strawberries and raspberries, blues for blueberries, black/blues/purples for blackberries, pinks, greens and whites for watermelons, yellows for lemons etc."

Feel free to let your creative juices flow by making fruit-colored hats, and you can embellish the hats too - my son S. suggests sewing little crocheted or knitted fruits all over them, as one idea. :-)  Or there are free patterns out there for hats that look like fruit shapes -- lemons, strawberries, apples, and even veggies such as pumpkins would be fun!

To clarify, we are asking for fruit-colored hats, not having to be a fruit-shaped hat -- sorry for any confusion there.

Ronda has asked for hats/beanies and jumpers/sweaters that would fit 2-6 year olds, keeping in mind that a 2-year-old's head is quite large, so if anyone would like to make and send jumpers/sweaters, please be sure that the head openings are large enough for them to fit comfortably over the head.

SQUARES ARE ALWAYS WELCOME AND NEEDED!  Sandy shared earlier that we need 120 blankets for the KlipTown Community School, which is 4,200 squares, so if you would like to keep making squares, please do so!  We can track hats/beanies, jumpers and squares this time.

Any other fruity ideas? Please share with us!

Please add up the numbers in our individual posts so we have a running tally of hats, squares, and jumpers.

Edited to add: We'll add to the totals in each post and not use a tracking spreadsheet this month, if that's ok with everyone. Thanks!

Goals:

Hats/beanies - 120  Size 2-6 yrs

Squares - 4,200

Jumpers/sweaters - 120 (to go along with the hat and blanket?)  Size 2-6 yrs

Where could I find a crochet pattern for a fruit hat or beanie for a 2-6 year old?
Just to get us started I have found an apple hat

More fruit and food here, could be used as embellishments ?

I found some pumpkin hats, an apple hat and watermelon hats on ravelry. You have to be a member but membership is free and it takes a couple of days to be accepted. Lots of free patterns and some for sale. I don't know what fruits and vegetables they have in SA so don't know if they would recognize what we are making.
Jan,
I get a lot of patterns on Ravelry too. Membership is now immediate, no more waiting for a few days. That was just part of the Ravelry beta version.

:)
Great Rona, this is going to be wonderfully colourful. Don't forget everyone you can just knit/crochet in fruity coloured yarn. Luscious berry colours, bright citruses and pastel peaches/apricots - scrummy! I have some cherry coloured yarn, perhaps with just some green leaves at the top it would make a lovely little cherry hat!
The warermelon hats looked real easy to make. They were a pink/red with one row of white at the bottom and then a green shell pattern border. They had black stitches embroidered in the red/pink area for the seeds.
I love Jan's description. You could take any simple beanie hat pattern and do most of it in watermelon red/pink then as you say Jan, change and do one row in white or cream then one or two rows in green for the bottom of the hat, the "rind". Then all you need to do is put in a few knots of black with a yarn needle for seeds on the red area. Yep, I can totally see that. As for pumpkin hats...do a hat in orange then once sewn up add a bright green cord doubled over sewn into the gathered top for a stem, or crochet/knit a stem, a short piece of two rows width eh?

One could do a lovely hat in a cream then add some crocheted purple circles close together for a bunch of grapes appliqued onto the front or side of it, or do purple bobbles hanging from the top. Really talented people could do some cluster stitches in purple but that's beyond me. Anyways just some thoughts. I'm flattered my fruity idea has sprouted. ;)

But honestly any hat in bright fruit colors will be super, it doesn't have to look like the fruit just borrow the color from it. A bunch of lemon or banana yellow hats for example, or lime green or variegated purples for a bunch of grapes, and so forth. I'm going to enjoy this one, once I find some bright yarns, I've been working in other colors, go figure.
Ok, you guys are making me hungry......and excited about this challenge! I can't wait to find some fruity looking yarn! I may even try to get some from jo-ann and enter the challenge!
You can do it! Let us know if you enter it in the Craft for a Cause contest and be sure to add a photo here for us to see.

:)
Spud and Chloe have a free watermelon hat on their blog. I think the 'small child' size may be big enough for toddlers/preschoolers.

Check it out here: http://www.spudandchloe.com/blog/2009/07/watermelon-hat-free-pattern/
I would like to continue with fruity coloured squares as I am not very good at hats, so to continue with the theme of last challenge I will try to get some interesting squares to go with the hats that will be sent to you.

Love Ann
That's great Ann, as we are always going to be wanting squares and these fruity squares will be so bright and colourful. Talking about that I am off a photo of Peter Lovemore Blankets in 'on the Ground in South Africa!'
