Square Circle Forum

Hi everyone!  Here's our idea for the September challenge, courtesy of Jeanne:

"Fruit colored hats", that would include reds for strawberries and raspberries, blues for blueberries, black/blues/purples for blackberries, pinks, greens and whites for watermelons, yellows for lemons etc."

Feel free to let your creative juices flow by making fruit-colored hats, and you can embellish the hats too - my son S. suggests sewing little crocheted or knitted fruits all over them, as one idea. :-)  Or there are free patterns out there for hats that look like fruit shapes -- lemons, strawberries, apples, and even veggies such as pumpkins would be fun!

To clarify, we are asking for fruit-colored hats, not having to be a fruit-shaped hat -- sorry for any confusion there.

Ronda has asked for hats/beanies and jumpers/sweaters that would fit 2-6 year olds, keeping in mind that a 2-year-old's head is quite large, so if anyone would like to make and send jumpers/sweaters, please be sure that the head openings are large enough for them to fit comfortably over the head.

SQUARES ARE ALWAYS WELCOME AND NEEDED!  Sandy shared earlier that we need 120 blankets for the KlipTown Community School, which is 4,200 squares, so if you would like to keep making squares, please do so!  We can track hats/beanies, jumpers and squares this time.

Any other fruity ideas? Please share with us!

Please add up the numbers in our individual posts so we have a running tally of hats, squares, and jumpers.

Edited to add: We'll add to the totals in each post and not use a tracking spreadsheet this month, if that's ok with everyone. Thanks!

Goals:

Hats/beanies - 120  Size 2-6 yrs

Squares - 4,200

Jumpers/sweaters - 120 (to go along with the hat and blanket?)  Size 2-6 yrs

Christine, when you make scarves for the teddies do you stitch them in place or tie them so recipients can enjoy dressing and undressing the teddies? I can remember as a child feeling really disappointed if doll/teddy clothes were sewn on, but maybe it's not practical in this case for things to be unsecured. Am doing some "teddy"colours and some various.
Anne, I'm so sorry but I didn't see this reply before. Yes, I do try to make all scarves, hats, jackets etc removeable as I agree with you, as a child I was always disappointed if I couldn't take garments off my toys. My poor mum used to spend hours making outfits for my dolls and the first thing I would do would be to remove them and she didn't like that much. Today I went right back to childhood and made a teeny dress for a rabbit and had a bit of trouble finding a small enough button so that it could be undone and taken off.
I enjoyed it last summer when there were listed names of children with ages and sizes and we picked chiildren to sew for from the list...I think we also put names on the items we mailed out...then we were treated to pictures of the children wearing things that were made for them according to what they needed and each received more then one item by a sewer....blanket squares for one blanket and hat and go-over or slip-over...this could be done for any age child in need and some of us did 2 or more children. Education items and toys were also items sent for a child. Sponsoring a school could be fun or a home that is set up to house children in need. Guess I am thinking to center on one major need and filling it....Christmas is coming (:0)
I like your idea Paulette. I thought of that for creches but I guess there would be a problem there with some creches geting more than others. I thought if it were possible maybe the children of a creche and their families. However the logistics in SA might be a bit much and there is the issue of some getting more than others while there is a need for so many children to have just something. I liked the idea of soft toys or puppets.that Sandy suggested. I was so moved to see those creche children cuddling their baby teddies etc so nicely. It indicates that those children at least have had some good caring and nuturing. It was very heartwarming. I am sure many kiddies don't even know how to play with them. However it would be lovely to see it happen all over again!!
love this idea. would encourage me to send something. Would love to see something on a child that I made.
Maybe a teddy challenge would be fine for the month.

This could include teddy bears, bought and knitted/crocheted
Other cuddly toys, bought and knitted/crocheted
Puippets, bought and knitted/crocheted
Hats or blanket squares in fluffy, hairy, shaggy (teddy) type yarns
Hats or blanket squares in teddy coloured yarns
Hats or blanket squares with teddy or other cute decorations, patterns or embellishments.

Is that a wide enough remit to suit us all?

that sounds great to me!
I have seen some really neat hand-puppets which are also bath scrubbies/sponges at my local 99 cent shop - would love to have an excuse to buy some of those!
And also crochet squares and hats and sweaters of course!
And lets keep working in the fruit colored yarns too! - they are so cheery.

really like I know I am repeating myself probably too hard to do it having a special child to do something for . For xmas makes it a little more personable.
Sounds good to me.
I just happened to find on the net yesterday a very cute pattern for knitted clown hand puppets on another charity site that I thought I might do at some time.
If the items were intended to arrive in time for Christmas it may involve sending Air Mail rather than Surface, but shouldn't be too expensive for just 1 or 2 items.

Regarding sponsoring individual children, I can see the difficulties that this may involve.
Extra work for everyone on the ground in SA, who must be SO busy already.
might be hard for beginners to do.

I’m sure that everyone’s contribution is always very much appreciated, but they do not always have to be part of a challenge.
I have a pile of “fruity” coloured squares waiting to be completed at the moment.
I didn’t mention them in the September challenge but I’m sure they will be welcome when I do eventually send them.
It’s typical of me. Not very good at meeting deadlines (grin)
Neither am I. I've just sent my hats but not many squares have gone yet.
Peggy, the pattern on the forum for hand-puppets is very basic and designed for beginners. (Nothing but knit, knit, knit and a little bit of casting on and off again.)
