A few things have happened already this year that have made me smile and I thought I would start a Good News thread. Please post here anything at all that warms the heart, reminds us of the generosity of others, good news about KAS or anything else to make us all smile as we go into 2012.

I had a heart warming phone call last week. In response to a newspaper appeal for wool I have been having emails from a man called John. He rang tonight to explain that he is not very computer literate and a friend comes once a fortnight to help him with emails. He is going to drive quite a long way - about 40 miles each way - to bring me a bin bag full of wool. It was his wife's - she died last May and he sounded so very sad, he obviously misses her a lot and this was his first Christmas alone. It is so kind that he wants to give it to KAS. Someone showed him the newspaper clipping and he wants to bring it up to me - he is 71. I am looking forward to meeting him - a good story to start the year and I will be able to keep my knitting team supplied for a while.

John has made it to my house. What a charming man - who obviously misses his wife a lot. He had an hour's drive to get to me - and came on the off chance without warning. I was out but so luckily got back while he was still at my house - so indoors for tea and cake and a chat. He was fascinated by the Izzy dolls and photos of the children. I sent him off with a newsletter and he would like more information about the use his wool has been put to. He left saying he would send me a cheque for postage - ah, quite a day. It was like Christmas when I unpacked the two big sacks to find 10kg of good quality double knitting in a rainbow of colours! See the Photos page for a pic of this wonderful bounty.
Permalink Reply by Pam Johnson on February 17, 2012 at 12:13am John has now sent me a donation towards postage as well - darling man - and all from a tiny notice in the county newspaper.
Permalink Reply by Pam Johnson on January 18, 2012 at 9:09am My WI group last week had a talk from a member who supports a Ugandan orphanage and she went out there to visit in July.
Just like KAS - sadness and joy - she showed us some pictures of the poverty and hardship there - but more of the orphanage started by a Canadian man and a Ugandan man who just saw the need and decided to act - AIDS of course a massive problem there too hence many orphans. Starting in '94 they have now built a big complex and the first children are now grown and healthy successful adults who come back to help with building etc. She has been out a few times to help - I am so jealous! She also said that why they like to help is that they can see every bit of aid they send used directly for the children and nothing gets in the way - just like KAS.
I am giving the WI a talk on KAS in October so this was a good warm up as she explained so much about the needs of the children in many parts of Africa.
Permalink Reply by Pam Antink on January 19, 2012 at 10:47am Pam, I think this is a great thread as the TV, Radio and Newspapers are relentless in their pursuit of miserable stories, when in fact, there is far far more goodness occurring - something the media resolutely ignore. KAS in itself is proof of the measure of goodness in the world!
I agree with you wholeheartedly Pam. There are a lot of good people in the world and a lot of good and happy things happen every day. The news here in the uk only report the bad things.

The scarf was so long (33 miles!) they had to measure in a stadium in Cardiff. It was hand knit by more than 2,000 people in Wales, over 18 months, to raise money for a children's hospice and the Feed the Children program. For more information on the scarf, go to the Guinness site." - ( fonte web)
Pam found this photo and blog which continues to prove that knitters/crocheters really are the most generous and kindest hearts around!
Wow! what an amazing feat.

Permalink Reply by Pam Antink on January 25, 2012 at 10:12am A new volunteer service has been set up to support Wheathampstead (Herts UK) residents who are carers, lonely, suffering from bereavement or experiencing relationship losses.
At the launch on January 10th the co-ordinator Lydia said: "We hope that this new service will make a real difference for some residents who feel lonely or isolated. Volunteers hope to help villagers by visiting, listening to them and carrying out light practical tasks. The new service has been organised by Wheathampstead Community Group and the local Churches Together group.
It was initiated because it was recognised that while Wheathampstead is a friendly village, there are people who may benefit from such support. A county councillor has provided funds from her country grant budget for a series of training sessions for volunteers.
Go to www.wheathampsteadwcg.org to see details and photos of the work being done by the volunteers.
See good things do happen.
I am enjoying reading items on this page. Personally I stopped buying newspapers years ago, not because of the bad news, and there is plenty of that and I catch up with that at the computer, but I dont want to hear all about so called 'celebrities' and who's dating which 'celebrity'. Wouldnt it be great if there was a newspaper which just carried good news? I'm sure there are lots of stories that people dont get to hear about, so lets keep this page rolling for as long as possible :)
