My father's mother was known as Gramma Cookie, and she passed away about 12 years ago. She was a nurse, and she also sewed and crocheted. She wasn't around when Knit A Square was formed, but I know that she would have sent a square or two to South Africa to help the AIDS orphans and vulnerable children there.
This granny square design is in her honor, with the sample square done in her favorite color, purple. I'll add a step by step photo tutorial on my blog later. This one works up really quickly - you can bang out a few of these a day, if you have the time.
Love you and miss you, Gramma Cookie! XXXOOO
Gramma Cookie's Solid Granny Square
Hook: H/5.0 mm, Yarn: Worsted Weight/4 (I use Red Heart Super Saver and I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby mostly)>
Round 1: Into a Magic Ring,* ch 4, (3 dc, ch 2) three times, 2 dc, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 4 to close the first round.
(If you don't know to work a Magic Ring or are afraid to try one, ch 4, sl st to first ch to make a ring, then continue from ch 4 above, working the stitches into the center of the ring, like any other granny square)
Round 2: Sl st into ch2 space, ch 4, 2 dc in ch 2 space, (dc in each dc across, 2 dc in next ch 2 space, ch 2, 2 dc in same ch 2 space), repeat around the square, ending with 1 dc in ch 2 space [over the sl st in the row below], sl st to top of ch 4
Round 3: Repeat Round 2
Round 4: Repeat Round 2
Round 5: Repeat Round 2
Round 6: Repeat Round 2. Note: Measure your square at the end of Round 6, to determine if you need a full last round in dc. Depending on the yarn used, I may either end with Round 7, or even have to add another sc or hdc round to reach 8." If it is near 8" at the end of Round 6, you can make Round 7 with either sc or hdc.
Round 7: Repeat Round 2. Measure your square. If 8", finish off by 1 sc, then measuring 36" of the working yarn, cut and pull through the sc just made. Butterfly the yarn and tie it off, as this will be used to sew the squares together in South Africa.
If the square is less than 8", use your judgement and make a Round 8 with either sc or hdc. FO as above.
You can personalize the pattern by alternating stripes of color around, or even using different variegated colors to make it super colorful. You could also switch up the stitches each round by switching between dc, hdc, and sc. I would not make any stitches longer than dc, to keep it tight and warm for Knit A Square.
