Square Circle Forum

One of my sons sent me off with some money to buy more wool today, and the other is keen on felting some squares. I am stoked that they are so interested.
Jean thanks for letting me know you can't reply. I don't know why either! Can anyone help? I am so interetsted in ways of making squares the right sizes square. Great to read feedback to Jean.

Yes I have had some trouble. I will see if it can be sorted. A blanket and 34 squares so far!!! I wanted to enter the challenge for the boys but I will carry on anyway.
That's a great idea for your yarn Christine!

Don't forget, if you have 34 squares already and some coordinate, that you can sew up 4 for the front, 4 for the back and 4 for each sleeve and presto, you have a GO-OVER and have contributed to the challenge for September. It takes 16 squares to make a GO-OVER. I am just mentioning that in case you want to enter but thought you couldn't. If the squares are reasonably hole-less, ie. fairly tightly done then they are perfect for a go-over construction. Anne has simple excellent directions how to do one. And as there are NO rules, you can make one of any combo of colours you like! :)

Just ignore me if I'm being a pest. ;)
I don't understand what the trouble is...34 squares is not a problem, it is fantastic.

To Pledge for the Jabulani Khakibos Boys, you can just leave a message in the thread called "September Challenge Tally". They just need thick knitted or crocheted squares in young man colours, so if any of your 34 squares are in colours your sons like, you can save them for the Khakibos group. You can Pledge them even though they are already knitted, the online Pledges list is just so Kalai can count how many squares, Go Overs and Hats they can expect in South Africa for those boys, to make sure we get them all covered between us. You do not have to choose a particular boy from the list, you can just tell Kalai what you have done, and she can choose a boy who needs it.

If you have already posted your 34 squares, they will have been sent to general distributions, which is fine, because they are already keeping orphans warm in that case. You can still make a Pledge for the teenage boys if you wish, promise to knit a certain number, or knit until you can't do any more and pop into the September Tally thread to state how many you have done. We can use acrylic yarn for the boys, because they don't use open flames for heat or cooking. I used acrylic to get some brighter colours onto my squares for them. I can get wool or acrylic around here, but nobody is into bright colours except the toddlers, so all the bright colours are in easy wash acrylic.

The instructions for the "Go Over" Jeanne is talking about are in the thread called "Go Over" along with an explanation of what it is for. To reach that thread, click on where it says "Forum" and then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page.
What an exciting thread everyone. Lets's see how many men/boys we can get involved. If anyone wants the basic instructions for felting woolen items, you can find them here on the knit-a-square website: http://www.knit-a-square.com/felting-squares.html

Happy felting! Sandy
If we keep a tally of men helping and what they do, more might join. Most of the men I know would anyway, they seem to like joining teams.
I agree, 34 squares is fantastic. I was suggesting some of them can be converted to a go-over if it's important to you to participate. Mrs RCM said it great. Might I add: There is no cut off date for joining the September Challenge! :) Even joining and pledging on Sept. 30 is fine with us!

I did find some very bright wool but that's also the stuff I am continually picking HAY out of as I work, lol. What the heck they were doing when they sheared those sheep I do NOT want to know! ;)
Thanks for all that. My pledge found its way to the right place. I hav used just wool so they might be better going to a family with no electricity. thanks for the suggestion about popovers I might give that a go when I get my new lot of wool arrives. By the way I have also picked out some hay out of the homespun hand dyed wool I had!! It tok awhile for me to realise what it was!
You two really mean that there was hay in your yarn don't you? I'm amazed, but at least you know it is for real!
Yes I mean real hay. That's when you REALLY know you're using a natural product, lol. As you say, the mark of authenticity!
Give your boys a hug from me and tell them their mamma raised them well!! ;)

It's so great to have them involved.
