I think here is the place to mention the donated, sewn fleece fabric hats that you can see on the kids at the late Zeverfontein Creche in one of the recent ezines. Basically two rectangles sewn together with the brim rolled up, and made in bright colours by a caring person who donated them to us, they looked adorable on the kids. Someone here mentioned it takes little fabric to make a two sided one, something like 1/3 yard each but it could have been much less as one child's pattern talks of making 10 out of a metre/yard of fabric! Fleece is SO warm and wears so well it is a great alternative for those who sew up a storm but aren't partial to crochet or knitting. :) If in the thicker fleece one layer would be great, and in the thinner fleece perhaps a double layer reversible. There's free patterns on the Net for these.
http://gailbable.tripod.com/id25.html That's the web page for the FREE fleece hat pattern. It's double sided and seems easy to sew up.
Awesome !
Jeanne, You are absolutely right about the fleece hats ! I keep thinking oh I have to make some.
I know that for the Baby blanket challenge I sent two sewn blankets because I was running out of time !
They were so quick and easy ! With the need for larger hats I think the fleece idea is Great ! A way for our non knitters and crocheters to become involved. Or maybe for those who do both, a rest on the hands in between squares !
Thank you Jeanne for posting the link !!

Oh Dawne, I think the world needs idealists !
A wonderful idea.
Jeanne I see what you are saying in regards to postage cost. A good point also.
We are talking about a limited number aren't we ? Thirty five boys is that correct ?
Might be a Good fit for an English class or maybe a club. I know back in the day ;) we had international clubs etc in High School.. just kind of thinking outloud... We surely don't want to take away from our main goal but I think we should also try to pinpoint ways that people who would'nt normally get involved for whatever reason are given a way to join the family , so to speak :) hmmmm will have to give this more thought....
Thanks for your cheery statement. "Idealists" never measured high up by my father's standards. Still... where would any of us be without them? I'm not sure I'd have voting rights as a woman, for example.

The pen pal exchange may cost a little in the beginning but when (says the idealist) we are successful in securing a computer for the Jubalani Khakibos boys the friendships may be able to become email based, rather than sent through traditional post.

As a somewhat 'addicted' knitter surrounded by what I call knitting-negativity ("I don't have the patience." "I could never do that." "I'm too young to knit.") I know dozens of people who wouldn't bother knitting/crocheting a single square - much less several - but they may want to be supportive in other ways. Getting them on board, or at least having potential ways for them to come on board is a great idea.
Dawne,
When you think about it ...
All of us here are idealists in one degree or another...
Sometimes you have to believe before you see.

We must be sharing the knitting negativity bug... I get that alot too.
There heart is in the right place , they just are'nt "Crafty" LOL!
So we absolutely need to identify how to open the KAS door to those folks to.

Lets try to pinpoint the negatives ( may be hard for you : ) ) and answer them.

But lets also keep on thinking of other ways to open our door and put out the welome mat to our " non-crafty " bretheren !! ; )
One of the things I love most about this forum is that we are all idealists here - 'bonded' by our confidence that we'll reach our goals.

It is REFRESHING!

I told a friend of mine about KAS. She doesn't knit but her 12 year old daughter does and wants to help out. That email had me smiling all day yesterday :) (my own kids have no desire to learn.)

I told her she could have a ball or 2 of the yarn that was donated to me for her daughter. I thought 2 colours would be good if the girl wanted to mix it up a little ;)
Hello Dawne, that is exactly what this thread is about, the ability to think creatively without any negativity. I love this idea and will write to Stephanie about it. Particularly like the idea of postcards but realise they would have to be sent in envelopes if they were to include the stamps. Emails will of course be the go once we get that computer. About that I refuse to think negatively. It is just a question of time.
Idealists - absolutely! I think that is why I have taken to this forum as opposed to others - because we are all idealists and believe in lighting a candle rather than complaining about the dark. I am an irreppresible optimist - it's just a fact of how I was born - and my best friend is extremely down to earth. When I dash off on a fantasy of possibilities and achievement she always wants to burst my bubble and make me be "realistic"! I'm sorry for her really - much more fun to be like us - seeing the endless possibilities that are growing out of a little knitted square :0)
I wonder could we add these ideas of what to send to the IDEAS thread? Like the postcards and the tape in clothes with names on - such good ideas I'm afraid of missing something. I know what you mean about smiling all day - people here who don't knit are starting to give me donations for postage - so EVERYONE can help in some way. Have a lovely idealistic day everyone, lol!
Hi Pam... when I explain KAS to people, they sometimes look at me as if I am a little weird - especially when I say "We are changing the face of Africa - one 8" square at a time" No matter - all great changes in this world have been brought about by idealists... a couple of cases in point - Mother Theresa and Ghandi!

One of the moderators will very soon be starting a discussion under IDEAS that will be gathering all our upbeat and inspirational message into one spot - so watch for it. Just have to sort out with Sandy which one of us will be doing that.

By the way - will soon be posting a "name tape" photo - getting a little behind here, but bear with me
how amazing would it be if the boys could access this forum by their new computer, and see all of us in here working to help them.
Definitely going to turn idealist into realist on this one (the computer). A bit like a dog with a bone!
I am with you Sandy !!
I KNOW this will happen !!!!
Sometimes Tenacity is whats needed, and I think we have a lot of that !!!

Fingers Crossed :)
