The first Saturday in May is our annual, worldwide Knit-a-Square-on-the-go. this is the third year that we run this campaign and we are hoping to make it bigger and more universal than ever before.
first, what is a 'KASOTG'?
KASOTG aims to both educate and involve the public in the knit-a-square project. In the past we have had events being held in Canada, America, Kruger National Park (South Africa) and in a busy square in Melbourne, Australia. We provided information about the project, pamphlets and an e-zine sign up sheet. We had donation jars (and took yarn donations as well!) and little trinkets for sale to aid in fundraising. I sewed together a blanket and brought that along as a sample to show the people who wandered past our table.
The strength in a KASOTG is to get the people who are passing by to join in – we had crochet hooks, knitting needles, yarn and rulers set up around the tables and we asked people to join us for the afternoon and sit with us, pick up a pair of needles and make a square! People could make as much or as little of a square as they had time for, but what happened was that the unfinished square was passed to the next person and over time and with a lot of peoples contributing, slowly squares were being made.
All of our KASOTG events have been great successes. Read about the last years events in more detail here:

Okay, so what do we need from you?
We are asking you to help us again this year by spearheading your own KASOTG event in your community. Really, they are quite easy and take minimal amounts of planning to get even a little KASOTG organized. If you are interesting in hosting an event, get in contact with local coffee shops, yarn and craft stores and ask permission to come in on May 7st and have a KASOTG. Introduce yourself and your charity, and you may be surprised to see what happens. And maybe go bigger and go outside! We could find a park that has the space for a KASTOG and make the most of the warm spring weather.
when to start?
We are starting earlier this year so that people have more time to spread the word and sign up to host a KASOTG in their area. If you want to participate this year, start asking around now to find a location that suits you. Once you have secured a place, put up posters and send out emails - try to reach as many knitters and crocheters as you can who may be interested in coming out that day to lend their skills to us for the afternoon. It is also a great opportunity to meet each other, as there are KASers all over the globe and some may be in your neighbourhood! It may be easier to get together with another local KASer and plan the event together.
Imagine if this year we could get one KASOTG in every country. If everybody all around the world were knitting all together on one day for these children.
(as a sidenote: If you live in Ontario and are in or close enough to Toronto and want to buddy up with me, I am looking for a partner to do a KASOTG with this year)

Permalink Reply by Dawne Smith-Sliming on January 24, 2011 at 8:37am Thanks Pam. I was really happy to share Emma's words with our readers. It really does suggest that one can do something, no matter what obstacles or what limited resources. Here she is 14 with no job, no car etc.., and with the support of her folks she was an excellent co-organizer with me.

Well said! I echo your hope that we'll have a KASOTG event in every country with a KAS member. Even 2 people gathering to knit/crochet together in a coffee shop is a valuable use of time/resources. No matter how small or large an event it's all awareness raising, not to mention a great chance to raise some postage money or, even better, a donation for KAS.
