January challenge - design your own square.
Apologies for this being a little late, but here we are now.
this month is going to be a little different, this month it's all up to you. Start the new years off by creating something totally different and unique - this month we are designing our own squares and patterns.
there are lots and lots of you out there who have been knitting or crocheting for years and have a backlog of pattern knowledge and incredible skill, and we would like to showcase that and give you an opportunity to share with us what you can come up with. it doesn't have to be complicated or ground-breaking, but this one is entirely up to you. use any colours and patterns you like.
and this one is also for the newer knitters and crocheters as well - remember that if you can knit and purl, you have limitless design options. find a new pattern that you haven't really worked with before and adapt it to be your own. experiment. the only rule is that, as always, squares should be 8x8" and toasty warm.
please remember to write down your patterns and catalog them, as we will be collecting these new patterns for future use and sharing them on a larger scale later on.

We are really looking forward to seeing the results of your work and most importantly posting photographs and patterns of your squares to the square pattern tab under the patterns page. It would also be great to publish the square patterns in the KAS ebook scheduled for publication at the end of February. Please make sure that you do submit a pattern and photo so that we you can take part in compiling KAS Squares for future use for all our new knitters.
Remember that once you have knitted the square and posted the pattern, your design will continue to grace blankets for years and years to come, so it really is a legacy you are leaving this month.
and to always keep our long-term goal in mind, we are asking that you match every 'design your own' square with a couple of 'plain jane' squares to keep the square count climbing ever steadily upwards.

And like you said in the introduction; we would like to see the patterns written out so that people like me who aren't all that advanced in our knitting skills can learn new techniques and stitches! Maybe put all the patterns in one place!! When I click on the Patterns at the top of the page; it says Squares, Toys, Hats, etc. underneath it and no patterns come up. Is it supposed to be that way or do I still have to go to the discussions and find the patterns? Can you help me with this, Kyla? It would be sooo much easier if the "Patterns" tab could be clicked on to find the patterns I wish to make!

Yeah it's not the easiest to accomplish but Anne's been working hard on just that issue Donna and I'll see what I can do as well. Basically it involves hunting and cutting and pasting. Oh, I've just checked. Right now everything is together under the main Patterns page so check there at the moment.

Thanks Jeanne, I just clicked on Patterns instead of going underneath of it to the different sections under it and guess what? I found the few patterns that were there! Thanks alot for explaining it to me.

and thanks to Anne, because when I first took on the patterns page in a feeble attempt to organize it, it was overwhelming and just too much that needed to be done I had been scared away from the patterns page a long time ago. Anne to the rescue!

Hi Kyla - gonna be fun to see what our talented knitters come up with for this challenge!! Hopefully we will have some unique patterns we can feature later.
Had this query from Dianne Kubiak - Hi Anne.............what will be the protocol for 2010. Think the groups should start a count from zero on all items.? Might be a good challenge for ourselves from year to year now?
What do you think?? Guess you and Kalai will more or less be setting up and monitoring the challenges?? What do you think of Tallies - in themselves they make a good year long challenge - Maybe you will have some comments in response to Dianne?
Personally, I think I'll pass on the Jan. challenge and continue to stockpile GO-OVERS for Feb/Mar. I have so many volunteers making squares, I hardly have to do them anymore. Walked into church to help with a wedding today and found another 42 squares waiting for me. Gotta love it!!!

I hadn't thought of starting over at zero, I guess we could do that if everybody is up to it. It would be important to remember the numbers of the previous years tallies as well, so we can say "and in the combined efforts of the last three years, we have made 8,000 squares". but I'd be up for making it a yearly total. it could be a very large long-term goal to work towards - top last years totals! I'll put it through to Sandy and Kalai as well and see what they think.

Hi Lucy, the Feb challenge is to make go-overs for bigger kids. You can start when ever you like. It isn't a race and some people who prefer to make g-o's have already been making them and putting them aside for Feb. I don't make g-o's so I like many will just continue to make my preference of squares and hats. The monthly challeneg is not a start and end date fro an activity, just an excuse to boost efforts or focus minds on part of the KAS work.
