Square Circle Forum

Apologies for this being a little late, but here we are now.

this month is going to be a little different, this month it's all up to you. Start the new years off by creating something totally different and unique - this month we are designing our own squares and patterns.

there are lots and lots of you out there who have been knitting or crocheting for years and have a backlog of pattern knowledge and incredible skill, and we would like to showcase that and give you an opportunity to share with us what you can come up with. it doesn't have to be complicated or ground-breaking, but this one is entirely up to you. use any colours and patterns you like.

and this one is also for the newer knitters and crocheters as well - remember that if you can knit and purl, you have limitless design options. find a new pattern that you haven't really worked with before and adapt it to be your own. experiment. the only rule is that, as always, squares should be 8x8" and toasty warm.

please remember to write down your patterns and catalog them, as we will be collecting these new patterns for future use and sharing them on a larger scale later on.

from Sandy:

We are really looking forward to seeing the results of your work and most importantly posting photographs and patterns of your squares to the square pattern tab under the patterns page. It would also be great to publish the square patterns in the KAS ebook scheduled for publication at the end of February. Please make sure that you do submit a pattern and photo so that we you can take part in compiling KAS Squares for future use for all our new knitters.

Remember that once you have knitted the square and posted the pattern, your design will continue to grace blankets for years and years to come, so it really is a legacy you are leaving this month.

and to always keep our long-term goal in mind, we are asking that you match every 'design your own' square with a couple of 'plain jane' squares to keep the square count climbing ever steadily upwards.

Well said Jeni!... and you are absolutely right. The theme for February is keeping older children warm - so anything that does that is welcome - G-O's, squares, hats... and we all neeed to keep in mind that we will not all participate in every challenge. I am not talented at designing "original" squares....... so I didn't even try to do that for the January challenge... I just kept bashing away at what I AM good at, but I was cheering on the creative minds who could design and can hardly wait to see what they have come up with.

In the end, it's all about squares, squares and more squares... we can never have too many
ok, thanks for thant information
It is a wonderful idea, I have a few of my own design squares the only problem is I am not very good at writing down the patterns I will give it a try does anyone else have this problem?
I can write down a pattern that i can understand, but nobody else can follow it! which isn't much use really.
I agree the same with me, I usually scribble it all down!
Having joined your site today I am eager to take up this months challenge as my 1st.
Way to go Lisa. I like to follow others' patterns so I too am most interested to see what all you creative ladies come up with. I can totally understand Anne working on Go-Overs, she's so good at it and those lovely ladies at her church are helping out tons too. I am thinking we can make future Go-Overs from some of these patterns if we like, as Go-Overs are a series of squares anyways, four for the front, four for the back and four for each sleeve. And to increase a square's size we just add another round of stitches to it and presto, larger Go-Over in the end. :)
Welcome to the forum! Can't wait to see your design.

:)
Hello Lisa and welcome, we look forward to seeing the results of your first challenge. Sandy
Hi LIsa and welcome. Look forward to seeing your design!
A question. How does one know that a pattern is theirs? Is it enough to pull out a stitch motif, give it a border and right it up for the 8" size? I've just adapted the Seafoam pattern to use for a square, instead of a scarf for example, but does that make it mine? Anything in the Barbara Walker stitch dictionaries, for example; they've been around for decades and she has painstakingly compiled them. If I use one of those with a border of my choosing is it my pattern?
Hi Dawne, I think the pattern needs to be original for us to claim it as a KAS pattern. That is not to say that your design, as amended, is not entirely appropriate for this month's challenge, and that a pattern appropriately attributed cannot be put up for use by others, just that we won't claim it as a KAS pattern. That way we can continue to be creative in use of colours, yarn and stitches without necessarily actually initiating an original design to be part of the challenge. But if we do originate a design then the pattern can be called a KAS pattern.
