January challenge - design your own square.

Apologies for this being a little late, but here we are now. this month is going to be a little different, this month it's all up to you. Start the new years off by creating something totally different and unique - this month we are designing our own squares and patterns. there are lots and lots of you out there who have been knitting or crocheting for years and have a backlog of pattern knowledge and incredible skill, and we would like to showcase that and give you an opportunity to share with us what you can come up with. it doesn't have to be complicated or ground-breaking, but this one is entirely up to you. use any colours and patterns you like. and this one is also for the newer knitters and crocheters as well - remember that if you can knit and purl, you have limitless design options. find a new pattern that you haven't really worked with before and adapt it to be your own. experiment. the only rule is that, as always, squares should be 8x8" and toasty warm. please remember to write down your patterns and catalog them, as we will be collecting these new patterns for future use and sharing them on a larger scale later on. from Sandy: We are really looking forward to seeing the results of your work and most importantly posting photographs and patterns of your squares to the square pattern tab under the patterns page. It would also be great to publish the square patterns in the KAS ebook scheduled for publication at the end of February. Please make sure that you do submit a pattern and photo so that we you can take part in compiling KAS Squares for future use for all our new knitters. Remember that once you have knitted the square and posted the pattern, your design will continue to grace blankets for years and years to come, so it really is a legacy you are leaving this month. and to always keep our long-term goal in mind, we are asking that you match every 'design your own' square with a couple of 'plain jane' squares to keep the square count climbing ever steadily upwards.

  • Hi again Kyla - square now up under my photos, red cable stitch, and pattern on the pattern discussion page. Probably neither where they should be - but HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks hey.
  • Hi Kyla - have posted my designer square under my photos but not sure how to move it to the January challenge photograph page - it is photo number 00454 - can you help? Have asked Kalai as well. The pattern will shortly be posted to the pattern page - I HOPE - there is sooooooooooo much to follow on the forums, which is wonderful, but do get a bit confused about how to put items in the right places!! Happy 2010 - love Zanny
    • I can't find a specific January challenge album, but I can see your photos' information if I click on it, but not change it (except for the title), so I don't have the power to move it. You can set up an album and then stick your cabled square into it.

I made a January album and now your square is in it - I'm going to put everybody's January square photos into it as well, but right now I have to run to an ultrasound.
    • woops, I didn't see this until now - I'll have a look at it.
  • I've finished my first designed square - I thought I would start off with quite a simple pattern:

Do I post the pattern here or elsewhere?

    Here is it anyway:
Basic pattern - CO 2 stitches (one in each colour).
Row 1 - K1 increase one stitch by picking up the loop between next 2 stitches and knitting it. K to end.
Repeat Row 1 until the diagonal side measures 8" (for me that was 46 stitches).
    Row 2 - K1 K2tog K to end.
Repeat Row 2 until you have 4 stitches left. Next row K2 tog twice, finish by k2tog of final 2 stitches.

To get the colour pattern - CO 1 stitch in each colour. On each row, when you get to colour change, twist yarns at back of the work to join together. When you begin the decrease rows, break off yarns and swap colours.

I'm not very goood at writing our patterns so I hope this makes sense!!!
    • Well done Cathy and thanks, it is lovely to see a posted pattern, and your square is great. I am going to give this a try!

So hope that someone who is clever at intarsia will come up with the pattern for that great South African flag that Christine did.

You are all too clever by far, but I should take out a minute and watch Lucy's video.
    • the diagonal makes me think of the SA flag - now that would be a challenge. anyone?
      • I did do it once but I'm not very good at multi-colour knitting. It needs someone with more experience to develop it further.

        • Oh wow! Seems like Intarsia would work for this project? I would love to give a try but I have absolutely no time this month. Do you have a pattern or notes written up with regards to number of stitches, etc??

          This square is so wonderful!
          • What's a pattern? Seriously, there are a few notes about row and stitch counting on the print-out but no, I didn't really use anything else. I suppose I was attempting intarsia although at the time I had never heard of it. I've learned a lot since I joined KAS but I still don't know if I could make a better square now. The problem is that was a skinny square, based on 40 stitches which halved and quartered well and also fitted the diagonals. I have been trying to work out how I could make a better design with fewer stitches but I'm thown by the diagonals. Somebody (and I'm ever so sorry whoever you were - I've forgotten who) did send me a scan of a charted version based on 27 stitches which I have printed out but can't find on the site. Like you, Dawne, I just don't have time to play with it at the moment but if any of you ravelry knitters can come up with an improved version I would love to see it as it should be.
