Square Circle Forum

I continue to be inundated with the little square jumpers - 44 arrived today!  Most of this lot would fit a toddler but I also have loads that only fit a small doll!!  It is a pattern that really  appeals to people but I know it is not knitting up big enough - I get so many with ridiculously small neck holes - I don't know who they think they will fit.  The smallest ones I am unpicking and knitting up again as squares but could the pattern please come off the website to stop us getting any more - and should I post the larger ones yet?

Pam I hear your frustration loud and clear...is it this pattern?  http://square-circle-forum.ning.com/forum/topics/the-knitasquare-ch...  If not, let me know, I'll see what I can do.  People really would be better sending the small ones to a local hospital, quite right.  If we lived closer you could send me some of these and I could help you rework them into something you feel KAS can use.
Thanks Jeanne, yes that is the pattern.  It is such a shame as they are pretty and people like knitting them but the necks and arm widths limit them to very tiny children.  But I do have quite a lot that would fit a 2-3 year old and would like to send them off if they are wanted.  I was given some cardigans yesterday - beautifully made but not sure they would even fit a premature baby - more like a fat Barbie doll!!
Fat barbie Doll !! I had a real laugh but I understand your frustration. It is a very pretty pullover pattern but No KAS doesn't really have many uses for tiny pullovers these days. What a shame about the cardi's.
Alright I have deleted that pattern. It's misleading too many people. YES, we can use 2-3 year old sizes Pam. Certainly they can be sent and will be used. Some of the creches are just full of kids that size and age. I know it's fun to finish an item and it takes extra stick-to-it-iveness to make larger sizes but you're right, the small stuff is better given to local hospitals or women's shelters if they can use them. If people will consider making slightly bigger cardigans that would be super. We'll get a knitted jumper/slipover pattern up as soon as possible.

Thanks Jeanne,

I'll send on the largest ones as soon as postage funds allow.

Now, , can anyone please tell me the width of the neck needed for a 2yr old - and ideally the width of the sleeve or arm diameter.  I don't have a clue about the sizes of little ones and only want to post those that are big enough.

Hi Pam!

There's an excellent website called yarn stardards that has various measurements: yarn standards

For neck opening, anything bigger than baby size, I just check to see if I can fit my own head through it.

Good point Mary.  We have been told that the 2-3 year old heads are nearly the same size as adult heads. At least that is what either Ronda or Erin reported. Sorry, I forget which of them. :S

http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/size-chart.html  This is Bev's Country Cottage excellent chart, also put here--the metric converter link is on the page above. Below is head sizes...the neck opening HAS to allow this sized head to go through.  I am not including the baby sizes here as we truly can't use them right now but they're listed on the page link above.  If your neck opening width is half the head size around, ie. head circumference 20" = 10" opening you'll have tons of room.  Most of us find that a neck opening of a bit less than that, like 8 inches across (=16" around) will work because the neck usually stretches when put on.  Hope this helps a little?

Toddler - preschooler (12 months - 3 years)
Head Circumference: 18" to 20 " 46 -48 cm; Hat height = 8"  20 cm

Child (3 - 10 years)
Head Circumference: 19" - 20 1/2"  48-51 cm; Hat height =8.5"  22cm

Pre-teens and Teens  Hat
Head Circumference: 20 1/2" - 22"   53 -56 cm; height 9-10"  25 cm

Adult Woman
Head Circumference:  21.5" - 22.5"  Hat height = 11"

Adult Man
Head Circumference:  23" - 24"  58.4 cm - 61 cm; Hat height = 11"-11.5"

That's great thanks Jeanne - except it confirms my suspicions that most of what I have been given won't fit anyone - such a shame for all that work to go to waste.
Maybe you can take them apart for the yarn if they are too small
I have done that with some but it is very time consuming - guess they will sit in the "to do " box for quite a while.
I wonder if any fellow KASers that live near you can volunteer to help out? I was wondering if the jumpers could be opened if they are side seamed and just adjusted in some fashion? If it's knit in the round well I guess that's out....hmph.  I am working on getting the main KAS page pattern down...or re-sized...UP sized that is.
