KAS FINANCES - URGENT APPEAL
APPEAL FOR DISTRIBUTION FUNDS
Ronda has been in touch to let us know her concerns regarding the lack of funds in the KAS bank account. Ronda urgently requires funds to be able to carry out the winter distributions to the children, these distributions are due to start within the next few weeks before the weather becomes too cold.
Here is a message direct from Ronda;
“Sadly the flood was costly in terms of cleaning costs and re-organising the office so that nothing stands on the floor, ie. bringing in a whole bunch of shipping pallets etc. Not to mention room and fabric sprays to help with the appalling smell of damp wool which seemed not to go away despite our running all the room fans for two solid weeks!!!
In Rand terms it costs us between R30,000 and R35,000 per month to run KAS. That would be approximately $2600 or £2100 at current exchange rates. We have been receiving between $800 - $1500 via PAYPAL for many months now, so have eaten into our reserves each month. We have approximately 12 regularly monthly donors The bank account it is the lowest it has been in many years ”
As you can see there is a huge shortfall each month between the amount of money it takes to run KAS and the amount Ronda receives via PayPal donations. Today we are launching an appeal on behalf of Ronda to raise urgently needed distribution funds. Without these funds KAS cannot complete its wonderful work.

Going forward...... What can we do ?
As some of our older forum members will be aware, we have had to request for funds previously. Since moving into rental premises, KAS outgoings have increased, but so has KAS and it is not practical or realistic for KAS to be run from Ronda's home. Unfortunately grants are not easily obtainable. Ronda and her team are doing their best to try and win these and also search for cheaper premises. But both are not easy tasks.
Can you imagine what a relief it would be to Ronda and her team if we could all sign up to a monthly donation of $5,this would give her the stability. KAS operates on a shoestring budget and not a penny is wasted. Every penny really counts.
Look at how many forum member we have and if we all gave $5 dollars a month just imagine how many children Ronda could help and the security it would give KAS to keep going. So please ,please , please can you consider doing this.
We all know that KAS really does make a difference on the ground to these children.KAS Supplied blankets to 6000 children last year.
And finally .....
If any forum members have any ideas to help raise funds these would be welcomed by the Moderators. Please share on the discussion below or contact a moderator directly.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and your support. Together we can help and make a difference to these children's lives.
THE LATEST UPDATE ON KAS FINANICAL POSITION
To date we have raised
$14494.57 in donations and shop purchases
We have now have 104 monthly subscriptions
Ronda and the moderators can't thank you all enough for your generosity. The response has been overwhelming.
This really helps to give South Africa the financial stability they need. Ronda and the team can use all their time and energy on reaching the vulnerable and orphaned children of South Africa.
Thank you for the update, Sharon....wonderful news!!!!!!.........but we must not 'drop the ball', we still have a ways to go. :))
Sharon, thank you very much for keeping track and keeping us informed. Well done everyone!! xo
Thank you Sharon for this piece of good news. It's very encouraging as we're not even through April yet. We must do all we can to encourage people to keep on giving.
Thank you for adding this update Sharon and a HUGE thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, you are all amazing.......but I'm afraid we still have to keep plugging away at raising funds to meet Ronda's annual running costs of over $31,000.
Thank you Sharon for the update, huge progress made, but there is still a big hill to climb!
Yes it is a big hill but we will get to the top , with the KAS team behind we succeed.
Thanks for the update, Sharon. Just think - when you started this discussion on March 5, we only had 12 people signed up for monthly subscriptions. Now we have 104. What great news that is. Still a long way to go, but more monthly subscriptions will mean more stability for Ronda and team.
Great news on the increase of subs. It occurs to me that if the running costs are $31000 per year that is about $2500 per month. If we only had 250 members giving $10 per month that would cover it. So PLEASE if you haven't signed up for a monthly donation DO. Its a couple of coffee's a month - about £8 in pounds...
The destiny of our squares lies in the hands of groups of dedicated women in South Africa. These women have spent their lives loving and raising their children, and now their children's children. The grandmothers, Gogos, sew together each blanket of 35 squares for as little as $1 per blanket - a time consuming task, but one done with love for the children that Knit A Square SA, and we, support.
The month of May brings a special celebration of mothers and grandmothers from many countries around the world, including South Africa - Mothers Day, May 14th.
Can we make this a special month for our lovely Gogos of K-A-S by providing funds to sew blankets, not only for the month of May, but for the following months, too? Let us come together and show our appreciation of 'our' Gogos and indeed of mothers and grandmothers everywhere, with a donation in May.
Gogo support can be purchased HERE in the KAS Shop. Your downloadable gift certificate can then be given to your mother, grandmother or it can simply be the gift you give to yourself.
It can be a purchase in memory of someone special in your own life who has provided you with some of your most treasured memories.
Your donation, however big or small, will mean so very much to our Gogos. It helps them purchase 'luxuries' such as soap and toothpaste.
We have previously heard from Ronda about how some groups have banded together to assist their whole groups. Here is a little excerpt from Ronda:
They are amazingly delighted with their R10/blanket donation and we have heard of one group using the money to buy an urn to serve tea on sewing days; another group which needed a decent table; some have set up “investment” clubs and so on. They are a canny bunch indeed, and it is a thrill to know that they are being empowered by our small contribution/s. "
The photograph of the house and the lady sitting on the floor really show what they have to cope with. It is great that KAS gives them a sense of purpose and when people have virtually nothing, even a little makes a big difference. It is a shame though that it cannot be more but people who work with some of the gogos have reported a big change in their mental health and emotional well being since becoming involved with KAS. It was a brilliant idea of Wandi's to include them in the project.
Yes, amazing to think that what a lot of us would spend at a cafe for ONE tea or coffee can provide for a Gogo to sew a few blankets.
I do hope we raise enough for them, in May, to sew all the blankets, for the rest of this year, at least...wouldn't that be a fantastic achievement??!!
