Delete CommentChristine, I made up this pattern, but it may have existed before. It's made from single crochets and chains.

Let me try to write down a "pattern":

start with 5 chains, join with slip stitch to first chain to make a circle.

first round: chain 4, 1 sc in circle, ch 3, 1 sc in circle, ch 3, 1 sc in circle, ch 3, sc in FIRST LOOP of round 1.

from now on you work around and around, without joining rounds and going up to the next.

you now have a circle with 4 sc's and 4 loops.

work 1 ch, sc in same loop, 2 ch, sc in same loop (corner made)
ch 1, sc in next loop, ch 2, sc in same loop (another corner made)
ch 1, sc in next loop, ch 2, sc in same loop (another corner made)
ch 1, sc in next loop, ch 2, sc in same loop (another corner made)

ch 1, sc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, sc in next 2ch corner, ch 2, sc in same 2ch corner, ch 1, sc in next ch 1 space

continue working around and around always working 1 sc in each ch 1 space, and 1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc in each 2 ch space corner.

when you reach 8 inches across you are done. it looks neater if you end on a corner. cut yarn leaving a 1 yard tail (for the ladies to sew the squares together).

this is really hard to describe, but very easy to do. you work single crochets into chain spaces the whole way. I'm attaching a photo, but I'm afraid it doesn't show very well what I'm talking about...

Mary I have to tell you that I've done 1  1/2 squares in this pattern so far and it's straight forward and probably the best Granny Square I've done so far, only a little "tenting" in the middle, easily ignored.  I'm working on the second one now.  Your instructions are straightforward and I "got it" after about two rows.  I actually "got it"!   Yaaay me!
To remove my own tenting center I simply reduced that starting chain 5 to chain 4.  Ta da!
