Square Circle Forum

This looks the same as the original KasCuddle but is knitted on normal straight needles instead of the circular needle.

SIZE:                             MEDIUM                      LARGE

MEASUREMENTS:     28” (71 cm) around         30” (76 cm) around

by 28” (71 cm) long        by 30” (76 cm) long

YARN:

Acrylic Chunky*             375g                               430g

Pure Wool Chunky*       565g                               650g

*You can also use  2 strands of DK, which is less ‘gappy’

(It could be a good way to use up oddments of DK: have one strand in a neutral colour and the other strand using oddments of different colours just as they come, not trying to match the back and front.)

No matter if you are using Chunky or DK it still takes the same number of grams in weight.

Needles:    6.5mm (UK size 3)

Tension:    The finished width of the KasCuddle is important

so make a trial tension square first!

Working in garter stitch (knit every row) there should be 15 stitches per

4" (10cm) horizontally. The number of rows is not so important because you

will just knit until it is the right length.

                  If your square is too wide use slimmer needles;

if your square is too narrow then use fatter needles.

NB. If you decide to make the pattern in a different stitch then make sure you start off with enough stitches to still get the correct width, eg. for stocking stitch you will need more.

BACK

Cast on 52 (56) sts

Knit every row until work measures 23 (25) inches or 58 (64) cm.*

Change to rib (or double rib) and work another 5 inches (13 cm) for collar.

Cast off in rib.

FRONT

Work as for Back to *.

Rib (or double rib) 26 (28) stitches for left side of collar and turn, leaving remaining stitches on a holder.

Work on these 26 (28) sts only for 5” then cast off in rib.

Rejoin yarn to remaining stitches and finish right side of collar to match.

FINISHING

With right sides together, oversew cast-on edges together, then oversew up each side.

Please flat bottom seam this Cuddle rather than gather it...it gives the infants more "Kick Room".

Jeanne, the dimensions on this straight needle pattern need to be increased to 28-30" around and

28-30" long.

I made this pattern to the dimensions we were told to use when people first started making KasCuddles, and it was stressed that they shouldn't be too wide or too long.

Has there been a change in policy about this then? Or are they now wanted in a range of sizes?

If so I will amend the pattern when I have more time.

Rob

Hello Robert,

Yes, there has been a change in requirements. As Helen says above Ronda has asked that they are now 28-30 ins round and of similar length so that they are useful for older babies. And also that the bottom is left straight to give more 'kicking' room. Did you see the picture of the lovely one that Kathy made from your pattern? http://square-circle-forum.ning.com/photo/my-first-cuddle-1?context...

Hi Robert.  I concur, Ronda has asked for longer and wider Cuddles so the babies don't outgrow them too quickly and also so older babies can be helped. :)  Thanks so much for sharing this pattern with us.  You do beautiful work!

Hi Everybody,

I've now amended my KasCuddle pattern for bigger sizes as requested.

Rob  :-)

Thank you so much, Robert, for this update.  This will be a tremendous help for the new members especially who want to try a Cuddle in the new needed dimensions.
I agree.  Thanks so much hon.  You rock!
So is the pattern posted the amended one? Haven't looked at cuddles for ages because I struggled so much with the one I did on circular needles and the "straight" one went awry too. Tempted to have another go...thank you Robert.

Robert does great easy to follow patterns I think.  The new KAS Cuddles are asked to be 28 inches circumference (around) and 28 inches long, so the babies don't outgrow them so fast and so slightly older babies can be helped.  Also they are flat seamed across the bottom rather than gathered in so there's lots of lovely kick-room. Here's the look, though these are the smaller original pattern these will still be used and give an idea of what the finished ones look like.

It's definitely coming out on the larger side but will carry on and use a size smaller needles next time. It's growing apace! Thanks again Robert.
