Would it be an idea to turn some squares into ponchos?  It'd be like wearing the blankets when its really cold out.

Hi Nicola

We have a garment we make called a GO-OVER. You can find it in Patterns - Go-Overs. It is simple to make and is based on squares - designed for knitters who do not want a complicated pattern with shaping.....

It is probably a more practical garment than a poncho since it has sleeves and won't flap around or let the cold air blow up under. It is designed to be a bit bulky and 'shapeless' so that it can be worn over whatever other clothes the kids have during cold weather.

There are several photos - go to All Albums and then to GO-OVER VARIATIONS
The Go-Over looks really toastie!
It is. If you break down the pattern into the number of squares needed, it's not so intimidating. It goes over the thin cheap clothes the kids have to wear, helps them hold in body heat, particularly during winter, which is now in SA. :) 4 squares per sleeve, 4 squares for the front and 4 for the back. Then a little cuff or neckline or waistband, if desired. :) Mind you many knitters and crocheters are doing them in one piece fronts and backs, so whatever works best for you, if you are interested.
Tks v much - I would love to do one or two later...for now, though, I'll not be tempted from that squares target!!!
:)
I have been trying to convince myself to make a go-over for ages but keep putting it off. I was so pleased that the demand for squares is so high - it gives me an excuse to put off the g-o challenge for a while longer. I'm happy - I enjoy making squares.

Yes, I'm enjoying just making squares as well. There's something satisfying about watching the pile grow and thinking, that's another one!

good idea, although ponchos are not that warm, think about the gaps........probably better sticking to blankets.

Maybe making the squares into hoodie type jackets - thus keeping head, shoulders and body warm.

Let me know what u think ?
