Square Circle Forum

Hi
I am new to KAS and would like to know how to make up the scrap books and where to send them, also what about knitting needles as i have a few pairs i could spare. I have searched the site but cannot find much information. I would like to help if possible as i have lots of craft items i don't use anymore and feel sure i could put them to some use.

Hi Alison

First , Welcome to KAS !!!!
So glad to have you here !! The instructions are kinda buried in the middle of the Wish List Discussion in the forum.
I have copied them here for you. If you have any other ideas on ways to make them , feel free to jump in and talk about it.

As to the knitting needles, Any size are needed, crochet hooks & yarn needles also. We usually send them in the boxes with our squares. We only send a few at a time and wrapped in the squares to make sure they arrive without any problem.
I hope that helps....

Most of us have been taking sheets of construction paper, 8 1/2x11 and folding them in half to make the book pages, Carroll. Then you paste appropriate stickers on each page and there is various ways to connect them, including tying with yarn through 2 holes in the "spine" made with a yarn needle. There are some photos up of great ones that Anne Powell did, back a couple of pages in the Photo section, or go to her page (just click on her name) and you'll see her photos there too, that might be faster, given how quickly photos get added to the public pages. You can add a cover of "cardstock" or other firmer paper folded around the construction paper book if you wish but don't have to. Yes, they are slipped inbetween the squares in the packages. They truly have "no commercial value" but will be great for the kids in Africa. :)
Thanks Karen for your fast reply. Means i can get going this evening once my husband has been in the loft to get down my stash. Its such a fantastic idea and i love Annes books.
Thanks for this--I was wondering what size was wanted.
Takes me back to my teacher training days (30 years ago) when we were all expected to make books for children. Had so much practice, we could make them up in minutes.
I've just emailed my step granddaughter & asked her if she would like to make one, then we'll make up a parcel of some books and squares when I visit next week.
Hope you have fun making the books Allison, and welcome to KAS!!!

My 2 cents on sending yarn needles and knitting needles and crochet hooks - plastic is preferable if you have them - in case our packages get x-rayed in customs.

I am moving this discussion over to the IDEAS category so more people will find it. will try to find our other discussion on the books and combine with yours.
All the needles i have are metal. Is it unadvisable to send them, what happens if they are x-rayed? sory about all the questions!
Welcome to the group, Alison.
No worries on the number of questions...how else would you get information? :))

I have only sent plastic or wooden knitting/crochet pins and hooks. Just made sure they were wrapped inside the knitted objects to be secure. We need to be mindful that 'suspect' packages could be opened and destroyed at any point of their journey.
When filling in the customs form on your package, remember to state the contents are FOR CHARITY, NO COMMERCIAL VALUE.
