Hello lovely KAS people
I have a challenge to put to you.
We understand that people are frustrated by the Square Vest Pattern and wish it to be taken off the site, the thing is, it is the page that gets us the most traffic. Therefore, taking it down would lose potential KAS people and therefore warmth for those beloved children. So, I have a challenge for all you knitters out there. We need the Square Vest Pattern to be re done, we need it to be knitted half again as long, and in garter stitch only. It needs to be pretty and simple and we need a photograph of it. The neck hole also needs to be big enough to fit a two year olds head (almost the same size as an adult). So knitters out there, how do you feel? Will you help me to replace the pattern and not lose the very important traffic that we get every day from having the pattern on our website?
Let me know how you feel. Thank you!
P.S. Here is the link to the old pattern: http://www.knit-a-square.com/free-knitting-pattern.html
We need to do this ASAP so that I can replace it ASAP.

Hi Kalai, basically it is thus:
using needles that are compliant to chosen yarn, cast on enough stitches for 12inch width. Then knit every row until piece is a 12 inch square, cast off. Make a second 12 inch square, and cast off. Lay one square on top of another, and, sew shoulders. Starting from outside edge, work for three inches. Repeat for other shoulder. Then seam up each side from bottom for 8 inches.
vest can be made using just one colour, or striped as your yarn permits.
hope that is understandable?
Hi Enid
We actually need the pattern to be at least 16 inches in length. The idea of this challenge is to get someone to write out the pattern exactly and take a photo of their work so that we can put it up on the main website. Thank you for the explanation though!
We definitely need longer vests. AND to make sure that the neck opening will fit over an adults head.
Hi Kathryn
Yes that sounds fine. The pattern just needs to be I think half as long as the old one again. I think the width of the old one is fine it's just the length. Thanks for this!

Permalink Reply by Erica Smith on April 5, 2011 at 10:20pm Getting the neck hole to fit on an actual two-square vest is going to be a problem regardless, because there's not really anywhere to add give without weakening the shoulder joins... Would it be okay to do it as a four-square vest? Two large squares for front and back, and two small squares for shoulders? Or something along a similar theme?
Permalink Reply by Christine Johnson on April 5, 2011 at 10:44pm My thinking exactly Erica. If you make 2x16" squares (to get the length) the garment will be too wide. If you make two (say) 12x16" rectangles it would be difficult to join the shoulders and leave a big enough neck opening. I am trying one out at the moment but I am coming to the conclusion that it would be best to have 'shoulder strap' rectangles as Erica suggests.(but isn't that then a basic slipover?)
For absolute beginners I was wondering if it would possible to ask for a pack of squares, to be joined in Africa like the blankets - two big squares or rectangles plus two small ones. I don't see the point in asking people to make things that cannot be used and I thought maybe even if the squares are too small at least they could be used in blankets and not wasted as must be the case at present.
In my case the pattern that has caused most difficulty size-wise from donations is the other one, the top with sleeves. It is easy to make it bigger and I believe that many people do but new people are asked to make it too small.

Hi Erica
Yes that would be great. Whatever you think is best, thank you!
Permalink Reply by Jan B on April 7, 2011 at 6:50am One possible way to help with the "wide neck" problem would be to have a small centre front slip/opening, just like the Go-Over. Back neck would be shorter and fit better on shoulders.
Back could be one simple rectangle in garter stitch.
Front could be either 2 rectangles, leaving a slit when sewing up or 1 rectangle with slit knitted in.
I do have computer software which will give standard measurements for different sizes/ages, which can then be adjusted if need be.
The problem with pattern writing is the different yarns that will be used.
What age/ages are needed the most at the moment ?
