Here is a pattern i have been working on for a while which i have adapted to fit a wide age range it is really warm and stretchy.  I have been knitting these up in a single evening.

UK Instructions

6mm needles

chunky yarn

Cast on 60 sts

k2 p2 entire hat

reapeat this pattern until hat measures 9 inches from the start.

k2tog and p2tog across next row.

When you get to the end, cut tail about 15" long and thread yarn through remaining stitches and off the needles.

Pull tightly to close the hat then sew up from the top.

Neat pattern, Alison... sounds quick and easy. Can we say this is a KAS original - that you came up with the pattern?? We are in need of good hat patterns for our new KAS Originals category. Any comments on changing size up or down to suit various ages?? Hard to tell from the photo what age this would fit. If you have any comments on size etc. - could you post them here?? How would you feel if we called this "Alison's One Evening Hat"?? Let me know and I will format it and upload to the "Originals"
Well it's early morning here and I need another coffee - of course this is for size 3-8 as you say in your header. Duh! so I will rephrase my earlier question - Could you make suggestions for upsizing this to fit 8-14...# of stitches, total lenght? thanks Alison.
Hi Anne
Glad to hear the pattern is of some use. Yes its ok to say its original i originally made it about 5 years ago when my eldest daughter was 15 by casting on 90 stitches but still knitting for 9" It just means the turn-up isn't as wide but i feel its quite generous anyway.
I think 80 stiches would be fine for age 8-14 years as it is really stretchy. The pattern is really easy to adapt and it would work just as well in 5.5 - 6.5 mm needles its just that i happen to have 6mm needles to hand when i started. As long as you cast on with an even number of stitches so you can get the double rib pattern.
I would feel honoured if you called it "Alisons One Evening Hat! I usually start knitting at about 7.30 in the evening and finish at about 11.30 so takes about 4 hours if you don't take too many tea breaks!
Absolutely a super hat! I love the color combo and it looks so soft and warm and yes stretchy. Stretch is SO important on hats. I rarely knit but even I could manage to do this one. Thanks for sharing it!
