Tally - countdown to 55,900 squares for Summer 2010! 20,980 made

Ok everyone - let's tally our squares to meet the need for 55,900 squares per Sandy's post -- make that 18 squares per month for three months times 1,000 forum members.  Please comment here with the squares you've made (not just shipped) and collected from church groups, school groups, etc... PLEASE POST AT THE END OF THE THREAD by replying to my message here via the “Reply to This” box right below this intro and above the Replies to Discussion area, please don’t reply to individuals, so I can find your updates easier - thanks! :-) Please post your total squares made so I can update the spreadsheet correctly. Thanks! I'll update the grand total every couple of days.

Hugs to you all,

Rona

TALLY 9/9/10:

TOTAL MADE: 20,980

Click below to see the number of squares per KASer - thought it would be easier to track it this way, with our growing number of contributors!  And thanks to RhondaH on Ravelry for the idea! You can view but not edit the spreadsheet.  Please let me know if anyone has any trouble viewing it, thanks:

Rona if you're doing the math on this one then you're going to be here every day I predict, in order to keep up! KASers are Whiz Bangs--(a small explosive shooting firework that rockets along the ground) when it comes to rising to challenges. You have been warned girl, lol.

Here's what the Mods have come up with for this Squares Challenge, please pick what appeals to you most, or a different one for each month of June, July and August, or go your own way and be proud of it!

-Personal Best-challenge yourself with a new monthly "personal best" total in Plain Janes. Anne finds them very meditative to do.
-Pete would "Lovemore" Squares (Peter Lovemore, Sandy's Uncle, Ronda's brother etc. missed by many here and recently passed), he loved blues and pinks, bright colors.
-Stripes for Summer
-Wild and Woolly (I'm doing super bulky very soft slubbed yarn leftovers from a friend, thick and warm-I literally have to feel for where to insert the hook with my fingers)
-Clever Combos-pick 2 or 3 colors and see how many of each you can make in plain janes, or do combo squares, various patterns using only those 2-3 colors until they're all used up.
-My Favorite Team-do a batch of squares in the colors of your fav sports team, whatever it is
-Happy Hugs (warmest fluffiest happiest colors you can find)
-Soft Touch (silky or fluffy soft, your choice)
-Orange we great? (all rusts, golds and oranges, in combo or plain jane singles-equal number in each solid color)
-Pretty in Pink and Purple
-Camo Combos--all boy type camouflage color combinations out there, can be plain janes or stripes or?
-Jungle Junket--wild animal colors only
-Beautiful Birds--in the colors of your native birds or your favorites from around the world
-South African Soccer team colors, in bold stripes or half and half, lemon yellow and grass green
-Adventures in Knitting and Crocheting-for this you have to make a square in a color, texture or weight of yarn that you've never tried before...ever. (ah what a great excuse to run to the yarn store, heh heh heh)
-Africa in August--due to the urgent need for squares Elizabeth suggests "that as well as the really intricate squares (which can take time) people can do simpler squares, like plain reds and browns, or green and gold Springbok squares, or red, white, black, green and yellow stripey squares--find an African animal or bird or flower and do those in squares, plain janes solids or however you wish.

Hopefully there's not too much duplication here. Have fun!!! And when you list a square total, let us know which challenge(s) you tackled.
Word of warning

Knitting and crochet athletes, please train for this marathon event!

If you currently knit only one square every few days, please don't do what I did on Saturday afternoon and learned to my cost, which was knit and crochet three squares in a flush of enthusiasm.

On Sunday a rib popped out - if you have ever experienced that you will know it is agonising and you can barely breathe without feeling someone is stabbing you with a blunt instrument! Fortunately, we have a great friend who is a truly amazing, remedial masseur and was able to gently push the recalcitrant bone into its rightful place and massage the complaining muscles back into compliance. Today I am as fit as a fiddle, but lesson learned. I need to train for this event. Leading up to more squares slowly.

What we do not want at any cost is a bunch of injured KASERS. My friend helped me write these rules for pain free knitting fitness and avoidance of injury. They are simple to follow, and I beg you all to read them and make sure that you none of you do yourselves a damage in pursuit of this amazing goal.
Hi Everyone

This challenge is taking off like a rocket and we are all excited to see the numbers growing so fast.

I was the "tally man" for the Feb/Mar challenge so I know what a huge job it is that Rona has taken on. In order to keep the tally, it is necessary to read the messages as they come in each day, go to the spreadsheet to add the new numbers, re-open the discussion and edit it to reflect the new numbers, names and totals. Sounds easy and it is really - but it IS time-consuming and since Rona has volunteered to do this for 90 days.... I would suggest we try to make her job a bit easier, so we don't wear her out

*******Could we all agree to report our squares ONLY in lots of 10 or more.... we can let them pile up for a few days before posting a message*******

And please remember to post the message so it will show " I have completed "XX" more squares, my total is now "XX" squares."

Please check Rona's list periodically to make sure your total is correct - and if it is not, post a message here. It is up to each of us to check our totals - some messages may get missed if they are not posted at the end of this thread (do this by using the "Reply to this" right under the discussion intro.

Thanks Rona for your heroic efforts in keeping this tally.
Just a quick FYI update from Erin in S.A.--this refers to the backlog, Ronda's house still is full of squares, as they keep arriving, but the backlog is done with.

We have sorted out the backlog, ladies. Anne is correct in saying that the reason we have asked for the inserts with addresses and no. of squares is, indeed, in anticipation of all the squares arriving and in order to streamline the processing of squares and packages on this side...

We are really running smoothly at the moment as far as opening goes and we are getting lots of squares out to our sewers to make up into blankets. Yay!

xoxo
