Square Circle Forum

Hello i think i have an idea that will be really useful. I find my self all the time browsing and going around the site trying to find out whats the actual temperature in africa at the moment. Thats how i found out that actually right now is winter over there i believe, and i bet a lot off ppl asked themselves blankets?? for africa?? because ive told my friends and they have said ( in a joke) shouldnt you be raising money to get them A/C is over a hundred degrees there!! Any how i believe it woulb be a great idea to have like a display on the page saying the temeperature there. The other day i looked it up and it was 54 and thats when I did my first square. I am from Florida and that temperature is freezing cold for me ha ha. I cant imagine for a little kid without anything. A blanket really would make a difference

Hi Michelle
GREAT IDEA !!!!
I love it !!
Hi Michelle

Good idea, you're right, a lot of people don't understand that it can get to below zero in South Africa during winter. Especially at night and living in a hut or a makeshift shelter made from cardboard and tin doesn't make much of a difference in that kind of weather. I'll pass this onto Sandy and we'll see if we can get it onto the site.
I think it would be fairly simple to do through an online feed from one of the weather channels. They display my outside temp for me on my computer 24/7 and it's a 7800 person speck so I'm sure Soweto would be easy to set up here, set to update every day or every 12 hours, whatever. It should require no maintenance from us whatsoever. :)
I think some people do not realise that people feel the cold more if they live in warmer climates. I have left the UK for Spain many times in winter, and holidaymakers are wearing shorts and a t shirt, while everyone who lives there all year round needs a warm jacket and thick trousers on. Also, Africa is a whole continent, and South Africa is just one country in it. I looked Johannesburg up in an atlas...it is pretty high above sea level, and if you just look at Cape Town's position, it must be windy there. On top of these things, many of the children are exposed all the time, if they are homeless or live in simple shelters, add an inadequate food supply, a lot of stress and illness, and I totally understand why these blankets are so popular.
probalby this would be an easy thing to do, we just need to find a site that will host a feed.
i have looked, and have found sites that will host a feed but are having issues getting one to work properly for us.
Wow, The temperature info has just appeared on the forum and its brillant. Loads of info, makes me feel much closer to a far awy vountry. Thanks all.
got one!

it took a lot of hunting, as most sites only offer feeds from the states or canada, so it was hard to track down one that worked for SA. it should be up on the left side of the screen on the homepage.
Well done, Kyla. It's exactly where you said - should be very interesting, thank you.
I believe it is spring there now.
it is - they are on the bottom half of the world so their seasons are opposite to those on the top side of the world.

its spring for Sandy and Kalai too now.
Wow, 54 is freezing cold for you Michelle? Amazing. It's 32F here and will drop possibly to -40F before we're done with upcoming winter. It's GREAT to think of others having spring while we're heading into a deep freeze, makes me happy to know that.
