Square Circle Forum

Babies are cute.

Toddlers... extra cute.

Pre-schoolers... more cute.

12-year olds? Not so cute anymore. Might as well get a job and move out, they're practically adults!

Is that really how we think? Maybe, yes. Shame to admit it, but I was thinking just the other day as I worked on my squares how wonderful it would be to wrap up a tiny child in such a warm blanket. Tiny.

That got me to thinking about the older kids -- the ones who aren't so adorable in fuzzy hats and snuggly blankets anymore, just because they got old. How can we help them too?

So as I dropped my son off at school this morning, I came up with an idea:  Scarves!

Knitted, crocheted, loomed, any way! Just made in the "school colors" to match the uniform blazers and shirts worn to school every day.

We would probably have to know the particular colors beforehand so logistics could be difficult, but I would be willing to help in any way I could with it. I live on the East Rand -- so Tembisa would be easier then Soweto or Alex. It might even be impossible to pull off, but maybe the rest of the forum members here would have other/better ideas too

Good point to raise for discussion.  I, myself, have often wondered about cowls b/c scarves take more time.  something to keep the neck warm.  I'll send this onward and see what discussion results.

:)

All I know is that body/torso warmth is crucial at the moment so scarves are considered not needed at present.  That being said, if you found a school that wanted scarves you're free to go for it.  We need squares, or scarf-like strips that can be sewn into blankets more than anything else, particularly since winter will hit there soon...and the children love brightly colored sweaters and hats.  Most of the kids we're currently dealing with aren't in schools, too poor, mostly in the creches, the informal day care centers for orphans.  But you're 100% right, the older children need help just as much and deserve it just as much.  We've actually got enough for babies for the forseeable future, we need ages 2-10 and even pre-teens. :)
