Hello,

I have quite a lot of patchwork squares about 15cm across from an unfinished blanket.  Following some of the ideas on here, I thought I'd try to make them up into sleeveless jumpers for infants.

So far, I've sewn two sets of four squares together, to give me with a basic back and front 30cm square, leaving me with a chest measurement for the finished garment of just under 60cm.  I was going to finish it by edging the neck, armholes and bottom edge with ribbing or crochet.  But I'm not clear about how far I should close the top edge and how much room I should leave for a neckhole.  Similarly with how much space I should leave for the arms to go through, and how much I should elongate the bottom edge to leave it a suitable length.  Could anyone give me any guidance?

Thanks :-)

  • Thanks - that's really helpful.  I haven't managed to get the pattern book open yet - I'm using some rather creaky computers at present.

    • Sorry you can't open the Pattern Book.

Do you have Adobe Reader ?  This is the program used to view the patterns.  Here's the link.

      Hope this helps !

  • Hi Cherry, using the squares to make a vest is a good idea. 60 cm around should make it close to a size 4 which is perfect because Ronda in South Africa has asked us to make items for children who are 4-9 years old. If you have a look at the Go-Over pattern in the ‘Patterns’ tab it will give you a good idea of opening sizes.

The children have adult sized heads by the time they are four years old so if you make sure the vest fits over your head you should be fine.  I leave a 20 cm/8" neck width and a 13/5" cm slit down the front to make it easy to get over the head. (I also add a button to close the slit)

18 cm/7" for the armhole opening would give the child ample room if they decide to put something underneath the vest.

If you add about 8-10 cm/4" to the bottom it would make it long enough to cover the tummy.

    Hope this helps.

Please upload a photo when you are finished.  We'd love to see it !

    • Meant to mention, you could add shoulder straps instead of lengthening the bottom.  Again, just make sure it will fit over your head for the neck opening.
