Slip over pattern Very easy knitting – knit stitch only.

This slip over is made by knitting two large rectangles for front and back, and then two straps. All four rectangles are sewn together at the end.

Use 7.5 mm needles and soft yarn – anything from 4 ply (two strands) to 8 ply. Consider using two strands of baby yarn.

Large rectangle – make two (one for the front, one for the back)
Work in garter stitch (knit every row)

Size Number of stitches to cast on Number of rows
9 inches by 12 inches 32 84
10 inches by 13 inches 35 91
11 inches by 15 inches 39 105
12 inches by 16 inches 42 112
13 inches by 18 inches 46 126

Straps – make two
Cast on 8 stitches, knit 20 rows, cast off.

Sew together
Sew straps between front and back rectangles as shown
Fold in half, sew up side seams leaving the top third of garment open for arm holes. Do not make the arm holes too small.
Weave in ends.

Thanks, Elizabeth! I am going to try another one of these real soon I believe. I was very grateful for this pattern; this is the one I tried using on my one and only slip-over but I happened to make it larger so I adjusted the large rectangle and sewed the straps on. It's always wonderful to have very simple patterns for those of us who aren't all that experienced! I probably wouldn't have tried one if you hadn't written this one and shown the end result so I could pattern mine by yours!
Have a great knitting day!!

I am really confused about the needle size for this particular pattern.  My chart does not show a 7.5 mm needle; it goes

from a 6 1/2 to an 8mm...........what size is a 7.5 mm. in a U.S. size?  By comparison to a U.S. size, this seems like

a very large needle.  Can someone help me out here?     Also, the Sew Together section says to sew the straps

"as shown" but I can't find a photo.   And when it says "Fold in half" what is folded?  Is there a photo of this somewhere?

There does not seem to be a US equivalent of 7.5 mm (the old UK No 1) but it falls between 10 1/2 and 11 - very big.

I couldn't find a picture although I looked under the Slipover Variations album and Elizabeth's page. I think Elizabeth is suggesting that having knitted two large rectangles you join them together at the top edge with the two small strap rectangles, thus making one large piece with a gap for the head, and this large piece is folded in half and joined at the sides. This would be the most simple way to make a slipover wouldn't it for anyone who hasn't tackled decreasing or 'knitting a hole'.

Thanks, Christine.............I get the picture!!!  The needle size does seem to be a bit large.

I think I will try a size 10 U.S. and work with the number of cast on stitches to get the desired

size.  I'm looking for a slipover pattern that requires what I call "mindless knitting" at the moment........

no counting or patterns..........so I think this will work.   Thanks for your help!
