How about offering volunteering 'holidays'?

People from richer countries could be offered accomodation in a home, perhaps paying a little to cover their meals, and then spend their time sewing up blankets with others. Also perhaps they could be taken round places to see what goes on and why this work is so necessary. I don't mean like a guided tour, I just mean they would join in with whatever you are doing as it arises.

These people would then go back to their own countries even more enthusiastic and maybe prepared to do some fundraising?

I would happily go and work there for 10 days if required. My only problem is that I simply cannot afford the airfare to get there. Strong, able, willing, can sew, unpack, log, sort, whatever - but just cant afford to get there. I always think that if I won the lottery I would give a large donation to KAS but would also go and do a bit of work on the ground there too.

my husband and i did a volunteer week in costa rica with a group called the travelling tradesmen
my husband is a construction superintendent and was integral in the construction of two homes for people that live on a hillside in a tin roof community. so poor are these people they are not even recognized by the governement as residents. we stayed in a mission home - translation - bunk beds (12 women in one room) the women stayed separate from the men - no exceptions - meals were provided - and worker were showered and ready for work by 7:30 Am returned to "home" 6:00 PM ready for that bunk bed!!!
it was a humbling experience to say the least - myself - i would do it again and again - people are so appreciative - sign me up for a KAS week
I am so sorry that I missed this thread somehow - way back in MARCH!!! It would be WONDERFUL to have some volunteers to come over and help. We could definitely sort out accomodation either with one of us (depending on the circumstances at the time) or in a low cost hotel/B&B - of which there are many!

There are quite a lot of these sorts of trips run in various places. A couple of years ago I took 20 teenagers from my Church to an orphanage in Bulgaria for a week - We ran activities for the children, painted and decorated some of the dorm rooms and generally helped out where ever we could. Part of the process was for the teenagers to raise the money to go as a group - They did so well that we raised double the amount we needed to go and were able to leave a large donation with the orphanage and also buy a pair of new shoes for each of the children.

As well as helping out, it also gave the teenagers a real insight into the lives of other children and how fortunate those of us living in western countries can be. It was a real personal development journey for many of them and we needed to do quite a lot of work around the pastoral side of the trip to make sure none of them were too distressed by the things they experienced.
I would love to be able to fly to South Africa, but for now it is a dream...
Maybe one day!
It would be such a wonderful experience, but my health is not good at all....I have trouble walking and need to look at knee surgery on both knees some time soon, but I am a chicken...but I will tell you what I do every week...I don;t think I shared this before....I got real brave one day about 3-4 years ago or longer, and asked in this nice kids store that sells good used clothes...there is a name for it, but it has slipped my mind...My friend and I pick up every Monday afternoon, and sort all the clothes into countries....Romania, Phillipines, Hataii, our local Salvation army store, Lutheran churches that make baby layettes for struggling countries, Russia, and other things too...we have a local thing that is operated out of a church nearby, which gives coats and warm clothes away free every sat....a consignment store is what it is called...the clothes are in excellent quality, cause the owners want them to sell....I must have had 14-16 big bags today....so beings we can;t go abroad, that is what we do...my hubby is good to bring them in and out of the car...I am in touch with people that go to the field...so I don;t pay any postage etc....I hope you don't feel I am patting myself on the back...just wanted to share with you what we do...
Well that all sounds wonderful - well done! It sounds like what my Charity Knitting Club does but on a bigger scale. You are very lucky to have the free transport links abroad! It's not easy finding them but it can be done, and all of our stuff goes abroad. We recently found a local man who supports evangelistic churches in Sri Lanka, and they are taking baby layettes and other things too.

Well if I had the air fare I'd be over there like a shot, but for now I'll just keep playing the lottery every week and hoping!
