Square Circle Forum

I was needing a bit of a pick-me-up today, so I went searching through my box of papers for some quotes I knew that I had in there.

This one really resonated with me this past week - "I will tell myself that it is ok to be scatterbrained once in a while, and that sometimes the kindness you show will balance out your faults." I really needed to heat this one at the moment - I needed a reminder to be gentle with myself.

Another one which means a lot to me is

"The question I've been afraid to ask"

"Sometimes I would like to ask God why He allows poverty, suffering, and injustice when He could do something about it.”

“Well, why don’t you ask Him?”

“Because I’m afraid He would ask me the same question.”

(Anonymous) -a quote from A Hole in the Gospel, by Richard Stearn, President of World Vision. I got this from www.wearethatfamily.com (click that link for life changing stories about the horrific poverty in Kenya)

Brennan Manning, author of Abba's Child, The Ragamuffin Gospel and many other excellent books....... on your idea of "being gentle with yourself"

"Just for today, I will not 'should' on myself"
Oh I love that one Anne. Brilliant.

My fav of all time doesn't immediately make sense until explained:

"There are no spear carriers in the Universe."

A famous sci-fi author said it, Ray Bradbury I believe. He meant that in movies all the time you see people that are only there as background filler or for the "hero" to kill in a battle. They have no names, no lives, no families, no hobbies, likes or dislikes...they are just "cardboard cutouts" if you will, whereas in reality everyone has a family, a story, a history, a background, likes, dislikes, dreams, plans...there are no "spear carriers" no nameless extras. We all count. We all matter, we're all important, we're all precious. I feel this applies so much to the many many children in South Africa, in all of Africa. Each one counts.

There are also many quotes by Mother Theresa I like. That lady was dialed in.

"Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired."

"I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love." (no, this does not mean crochet or knit til you hurt yourself, love begins at home kids!)

My fav, and it so applies to KAS, and what people are doing here, plus in the creches and other projects in SA:

"Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work."

To me that means squares! :D
That's wonderful! Another Mother Teresa quote I like is 'I know that God will never give me anything I can't handle, I just wish that God didn't trust me so much'. I think wow, she did so much, and if she felt overwhelmed at times then that puts my worries into perspective!
I like the spear carrier one too - I always think that in movies where everyone gets shot. What about all those 'extras'?
wow I just lov that last quote Jeanne. Thanks
My two favourite quotes are
Mother Theresa: "We are not asked to do all of God's work in this world - just the work we can do."

John Keiran: "I am a part of everything I have ever read."

Although not strictly a quote, I carry around in my head the phrase "reverance for life". It was the life philosophy of Albert Schweitzer, whose biography I read as a teenager, and who has remained one of my all time super heroes.
KAS is a bit magical so here is a quote from Shakespeare

If you see a fairy ring
In a field of grass
Very lighty step around
Tiptoe as you pass;
Last night fairies frolicked there,
And the're sleeping somewhere near.
I've been collecting quotes for years and have a couple I would love to share. The first is by William Penn and probably sums up the philosophy I strive to live by:

"I expect to pass through life but once. If, therefore, there can be any kindness I can show or any good thing I can do for any fellow human being, let me do it now. For I shall not pass this way again".

....and this one reminds me of my local market town:

Someone gave me a smile today.
I tried my best to give it away
to everyone I chanced to meet
as I walked down the street.

But everyone that I could see
gave my smile right back to me.

When I got home, besides my smile
I had enough to reach a mile!

....and, finally, one for all of us:

Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.
I have also loved that quote of Willian Penn, Elaine, it really does make sense to me.
Just having a trawl around old KAS postings that I haven't had time to read - these quotes are lovely - especially the William Penn one Elaine - would that everyone felt like that - what a place this world would be.
this one just showed up in an email, I thought it was kind of cute:

"Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate."

if you are looking for wonderful, heartwarming quotes, I would direct you towards 'The Little Prince', by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

here's a rather extensive (indeed it is most of the book) list of quotes from The Little Prince

KYLA!! you are still going strong and here I was imagining you were off delivering Cordelia. I hadn't seen you comments for a while and my imagination ran riot. I was of course sending positive vibes your way.I promise I won't comment again I was overdue with 2 of mine and I did get sick of people saying -you are still here! PS I agree about the chocolate!
