Square Circle Forum

Recently we developed labels (address size) with a quote plus the KAS website - we stick labels randomly on the herbs & spices and other dried foods that we pack for our natural food business.  We personally retail our foods at St. Albans Market (Wed) and Enfield  in North London (Thurs), plus we supply Patrick on St. Albans (Sat) and Rob at Warwick and Oxford Markets and try to stick on around 200 labels per day in the hope we might get at least one hit.  The message will be changed monthly.

This Wednesday we had two enquiries - and both ladies knew an elderly person who loved to knit, but had no one to knit for !  Knitting is great for older people as it helps the brain and keeps coordination alive (I should know!). We gave them copies of KAS-on-a-page to spur them on.

Anyhow, it has eventually filtered through to my brain to stick on the labels on the corner of all mail so that KAS goes through the hands of the posties, lands on reception desks or even fair flung relatives & friends etc.,  I'm sure an eagle eyed knitter/crocheter would easily spot the wording knitting!   If KASers Google address labels quite a few companies provide quantities at a reasonable price - provided you don't go for the gold embrossed type!  This could be a simple and reasonable way of spreading the word.

KAS is our charity for the foreseeable future.  My brother Nick  (my business partner) is a keen supporter and enthusiastically explains the aims to enquring customers.  He particularly likes the fact that all of us are taking direct action, and, truly making a difference.

Any UK KASers please say hello if you are in our vicinity.  Pam

What a great - and generous - idea Pam. I am unlikely to be down your way any time soon but promise to look out for you both if I do get the chance. I have a batch of 3 to a page and KAS on a page fliers printed that I keep in my crochet bag as you never know when someone might see you crocheting and ask why. As you say, even just one or two enquiries at the time make it worth while. It's all the other web visits that happen later that we never know about. Your little labels have KAS reminders in peoples homes for days, weeks or even months. That is fantastic.

Dear Jeni,

Thanks for your positive and kind response. As you say, keeping KAS material on you at all times is vital, as people get curious when they see you knitting. Last year I was cross with myself because I hadn't downloaded KAS on a page when I had a few dental visits - knitting in the waiting room certainly kept me calm and several people asked what was I knitting. I explained verbally, but it would have been more successful if they had been handed the page which not only contains all the details, but pictures which demonstrate the squares, and, more importantly, the website details. If you do find yourself in this part of the UK then do e-mail as it would be lovely to meet another KASer! All the best, Pam
Pam - thank you for posting this very creative idea for spreading the word. I think this is one of the most fantastic ideas to come along for a long time! Hopefully many other KASers will pick up on this and try it for themselves... Could you post a photo of one of your labels so everyone gets the idea??

In this high-tech world we live in, we often hope that word of KAS will spread through the Internet - and I'm sure it does... but some low-tech solutions for getting the word out work very well too,

I have placed flyers in our church - on our mission board - with lots of photos beside them. People pick these up and they travel far and wide. Since our church covers the postage, I am receiving hundreds and hundreds of squares - from people I didn't know before, who are knitting just because they got a flyer.

Last Christmas, I used the KAS Christmas card - sent them to both friends and clients. One of my firiends passed one on to a friend at her cottage who introduced KAS to 2 senior friends. - a short while later, a bag of 85 squares appeared on my porch... and Liz tells me the ladies have been knitting furiously ever since and she will be bring more squares back from the cottage. I have sent her off with some flyers which she will post in the 4 churches in the village near her cottage.

My little flyer has produced, not only hundreds of squares... but some very significant donations of yarn which I am able to pass on to some of my senior knitters who are on limited budgets.

Good for you for thinking of this label idea - imagine if we all used them!!

Totally awesome idea - a low-tech idea for spreading the word about a low-tech concept like knitting squares to keep kids warm.... I LOVE it!!!
Great Anne that you have documented here just how amazing your success at using the cards and flyers has been. Do you think we should have a place somewhere where we list successes like this. A sort of Spread the Word Success list to inspire others?
Thanks Anne, Much appreciate your comments regarding the labels. I'll do my best to get copies on show. I might have to e-mail them to Sandy first as I'm still not 100% confident with additions yet.

You have shown that by making a bit of extra effort that the rings from your pebbles are every flowing forward and outward. Your mystery porch donation seems to be the mode of travel for KAS squares. We've had some very sheepish looking husbands coming to our warehouse with bags bulging with squares & teddies - they say "I've been asked to bring these to you." , and, in a flash they are gone before we can even thank them properly ! Men - what can you do.......

Yes, the internet is a wonderful tool, but low-tech has its place too. The good old fashioned notice board can work wonders.

Again, thanks for your kind support. Pam
Pam, how wonderful that you are now sticking the labels on letters too. Do you have a pdf that we could upload to show everyone how very creative and attention grabbing they are. If not, I would be happy to recreate them for the resources section. Perhaps we could use this discussion, once people have seen your labels to come up with a series based on your ideas. They are really a such a brilliant way of spreading the word and I am so glad you have posted this on the forum. 200 labels a day is actually just fantastic, thank you so much Pam.
Thanks Sandy, I'll work on this one during the weekend. Good wishes, Pam
What a wonderful idea! I will make some labels right away and start using them on our mail, bills, etc. Also, I will bring some rulers to our local library...they make wonderful bookmarks...and another way to spread the word. Happy weekend!
Terrific idea - I love it. So simple and so effective. I foresee thousands of letters and parcels adorned with KAS stickers winging their way around the world.

I also like Debbie's idea of the rulers being used as bookmarks. Does anyone know if it's possible to cut and paste the bookmarks to get more than one on a page? I tried briefly but couldn't make it work.
I was able to get 3 rulers on a page. I had to print and cut out 2 more and paste them on a page and then copy them with my color copy function. They would look much better and clearer if printed right from the computer. Maybe someone can figure out how to do it right from the computer...
Hi Debbie and Elaine, I am updating the bookmarks to have the KasCare logo on them and they should be available soon. Will contact you when they are done. Sandy
I think Andrea Palmatier did a pdf with 3 or 4 on a page - Dawne mentioned having a copy. Maybe one of them will pick up on this and reply
