Here is one KasCare knitter/crocheter that provided a great explation to one of my questions. It is a pattern for a hat made in the shape of a rectangle. Here is the pattern by Rachel A.
I think the easiest hat pattern is the pattern where you crochet a rectangle and then sew it up to turn it into the hat. It's easiest because the stitch is simple, and it's very easy to adjust the size to come out just the way you'd like it. Here are the directions (they are on the forum somewhere, but I don't remember exactly where):
Making a hat from a rectangle:
Crochet a start chain of 8" (2-3 yrs.) or 8.5" (3-10 yrs. size) plus two, turn and sc across the row, ch 2. Next row sc in back loops only across, ch 2 turn. Repeat until piece measures 18"-20" (2-3 yrs. size) or 19"-20 1/2" (3-10 yrs. size). Fasten off, leaving 12" tail of yarn for seaming.
Using yarn needle or crochet hook, seam or crochet the two short sides together, leaving you a "tube". Fold hat flat. With the remaining yarn tail, crochet or sew across the top of one end of the "tube" (the long side now folded double) making sure to catch both edges, using big stitches and pull yarn tight to gather. That is the "top" of the hat. The other "long side" is left open of course.
Sew back across the gathered top to secure, take yarn to inside of hat, tie it off (or weave end in if you prefer, I knot them as it won't be noticed or felt), trim the yarn end to an inch or two, fold hat back other way out and presto...HAT! If you want it to have a fold-up brim just make the starting crochet chain 2 inches longer then, when finished, fold up the unseamed side for a "brim" or "cuff". :) If you make larger sized hats they just roll up the brim anyways and roll it down as the child grows. Single crocheting into the back loops gives this hat plenty of stretch for growing.
You can always add a trim of fluffy fun fur or something along the unseamed side if you wish. :)
Some changes I've made:
*this pattern says to use sc, but I have also used hdc and it has still been nice and solid and goes a little faster; I don't use dc because, unless I'm using really fuzzy yarn, I think the gaps around the stitches are too big
*instead of finishing off at the end of the last row, I fold the rectangle in half (so that the short sides are touching) and slip stitch those sides together, THEN I finish off leaving a tail for gathering the top
*every time I have sewn through both thicknesses of the top of the hat and tried to pull it to gather the top, I end up with a scrunched up rectangle, but if I run the yarn around the top, through one layer, instead of both, in a circle (starting and ending at the same point) and pull that tight as I go, it makes a nice scrunched top--it leaves a little hole right in the middle, so I sew from side to side of the little hold to pull it closed
I don't know if I explained it very well, and I'm not very good at visualizing these things, so let me know if you'd like me to take some pictures and add those with my explanation =). I'm hoping to have another rectangle ready to turn into a hat by the end of the day.

Maggie, this group has fallen a bit by the wayside because Dawson is busy with his studies. I kept tallying for a while but no-one else did so I stopped. We do have two other tallies running anyway. For myself I do average at least a square a day, even if don't make one every single day.
I expect that people are still there but don't want to be the first to comment so well done for getting the ball rolling again.

Hello dear SquareADay KasFolk, a happy belated New Year. Hope to spend a bit more time in the forum and groups this year, so have just sent a broadcast and posted a discussion about the challenges for the year. I would be so grateful if you could hop on in there and add your ideas and thoughts. The suggested list is by no means set in stone. Christine: You're not a fraud, I do the same thing. With school, there are days where I'll be very busy and other days where I'm not, so I pile up on the free days and skip the busy ones. Can't wait to see the big posting!

Hi Anna, welcome to the group. You appear to be the first Aussie although other members are in all parts of the globe.
I feel a bit of a fraud in this group as although my average is at least 35 squares a month there can be days when, like you, I don't make any. In the last couple of weeks I have only managed about two of my own but I have enlarged some 4 and 5 in squares I was given for the cause, sewn in the ends on another 100 from a similar source (another 100 still to do) and made a batch of hats. Then I felt I'd wanted to do some straightforward easy knitting so I've made a couple of garments and when the current one is finished I'll be back to squares.
I haven't tallied on here for ages because the last couple of dozen squares I've made are forming part of a Knit-a-Squillion display in my shop window. I'll have to have a major posting session soon though.

Hi All! I try to make at least one square a day, usually manage three or four, and so I make up for any days missed with my multiple days! I'm from Maitland in Australia - any other Aussies here?
