Hi Patricia, excuse me butting in. Is this the pattern you are wanting to make?
As Linda says, that is the variation in the Pattern Book and not the first one listed. You say you were knitting 1 stitch, then slipping 1, and then knitting another 1. For the variation (pictured) it is necessary to knit 3 between the slipped ones and then you do get more of 'a line'. I am making one at present and using 10 ply (Aran weight) on size 5mm needles it is working out on 37 stitches. There are so many variations on slip stitch patterns and they all seem to work and give different effects. You can have the yarn at the front or back of the work, vary the number of stitches between the slipped ones, knit or purl on row 4 - you get a variety of squares and it's interesting to see just what comes out. Hope you manage to get the one you want.
Patricia, the photo is for the variation pattern [at the end of the pattern] I have found a photo of the first pattern. Does your square look like this ?
