Hi there, can anyone here give me a bit of an idea of how to get something happening for KAS in my primary school? How does it run in other schools?

Hey there Cressida, what about a closed Yahoo group? That might be the best way to get started. I've just created one for our school's square circle club, and plan on using it to list days we can meet over the summer if anyone needs help, as well as having a directory where they can reach out to each other for knitting "play dates," and post questions to the group via email, and load up some square patterns.

There are also closed groups at Big Tent. I've been using the Yahoo groups myself, I like their calendar item email reminder feature, but both work the same. :-)

Just a thought!

Hope all's well with you!

Cressida, I'm so glad your presentations went so well, how exciting!

I don't know of any forums we can tap into for a KASKids group, but sure I'll help research to help find one. Whatever help you need, please just let me know. :-)

hugs,
Rona

Hi Rona!

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you - it was a pretty frantic week. Two very big presentations to two Melbourne schools and a lot else in between!

Both presentations very well received.

Thank you for your ideas Rona, they are right on the money. We definitely need it to be password protected and heavily monitored. I'm not so worried about the it being monitored by KAS staff and volunteers, but I haven't yet had the chance to look into how to make it more secure for use by children.

Do you have any experience with that kind of thing Rona? It would be wonderful if you knew where to start looking! But absolutely no pressure. It is something I must get onto soon, before we have lots of schools looking to join.

Perhaps we could do a bit of joint research?

Good idea having a separate teachers/parents thread for ideas sharing and troubleshooting.

I do want some involvement from our adult members, so that we can promote the wonderful benefits of cross-generation interaction that knitting engenders (phew mouthful!)

But that will be easy to arrange. Perhaps we could do something like have guest speakers - available for chats with the students ranging from topics on knitting patterns they love to how they incorporate knitting and charitable work into their busy lives....

Food for thought!

Cheers for now

Cressida,

It would be great to have a place for the kids to be able to interact together online in a safe place. They could share patterns, ideas, encouragement, that sort of thing. Almost like they should have their own community forum, like this one, but just for the kids and their parents and teachers. Definitely want it password protected, and maybe have access to it controlled by the teachers and mentors, so we can be sure that each child registered is truly a child and not put the children in danger in any way. Is this something I could help with from Colorado, USA? :-)

The teachers and parents could interact here in this group, and we could shut down the group I started, KAS In Our Schools, and migrate everyone over here so everyone can benefit from our past conversations and ideas sharing.

Just a few thoughts!

Hello everyone, thanks for joining!

We'll be presenting to two schools Melbourne next week, so hopefully we'll have our first school groups join the forum soon!

However, this section will be a bit of a work in progress. It will be important that parents and teachers feel comfortable that their charges are participating online in a safe and friendly environment.

This may mean limiting access to this section to participating schools' (students, parents, teachers etc) only.

Rona and Debbie, as parents and teachers - what are your thoughts?

Charlotte, I haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting you, but your advice and input is most welcome! It will be great to get to know you.

Cheers everyone, happy Wednesday.
Cressida
