Square Circle Forum

I have just purchased some 100% lambs wool.  I have worked it out that on 4.5 millimeter needles that I need to use 36 stitches to make 8 inches in garter stitch.  I this okay for the squares or is it too fine?

That sounds lovely, Barbara. Lamb's Wool is so soft and warm! I think as long as the squares are 8 inches, they will be matched with others of the same weight and sewn into a blanket. I really enjoy knitting with wool, especially with alpaca as it is so soft and not at all itchy.
Thank you Debbie and Christine for your replies. I like alpaca too but it is too expensive here to use. The alpaca I can get here is also very fine almost like fingering.
This yarn I bought I thought was knitting worsted but it seems to be a little thinner. That is the reason I was concerned that it might not be thick enough. The acrylic I am using to make other squares is 33 stitches on 6mm needles so you can see my concern that this wool might not be thick enough.
Thanks to this group. What a wonderful way to do something for the dear children in SA. I also give to the Sharing Way which is a charity through Canadian Baptist Mission to the vulnerable children in Rhonda. I feel like I can make a difference.
Sounds all right to me. Wool is warmer than acrylic and nicer to knit with. If you want a thicker square you could use it double?
I agree with Christine. Some of the DK-double knitting yarns are like the North American Sport Weight yarn, which is okay for a square but some are finer still, like a baby yarn and some KASers have been doubling those yarns. I would think use your own discretion on whether it's too thin or not. Sportweight is alright, but thinner might be best doubled up. :)
Beautiful Barbara go for it!
