Crochet slippers

This is the crochet version of Julia's Santa's Slippers:

These instructions will make slippers with a foot length of approx. 6.5 inches but they can easily be adapted to fit a smaller or larger foot.

Materials:  Approx. 50 gms DK; light worsted; #3 yarn
                  6 mm crochet hook

                  4 pompoms (optional)

                  Scrap of contrasting yarn

Special stitch: Sc2tog.  Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over draw loop through.  Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over draw loop through (3 loops on hook).  Yarn over, draw through all three loops.

Use the yarn double throughout.

Leaving a 10 inch tail, Ch. 23.

1st Row:
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end.    Ch 1, turn.  (Turning ch does not count as a stitch here and throughout)

2nd Row:  Sc in each sc to end (22 sc).  Ch 1, turn.

Rows 3 – 12:  Rep. 2nd row.

13th Row:  Sc2tog, then sc in each sc to within last 2 sc,  sc2tog.  Ch 1, turn

14th Row:  Sc in each sc to end (20 sc)  Ch 1, turn

Repeat rows 13 and 14 three times (12 sc)

Repeat row 13 once more (10 sc).  Fasten off leaving a long tail.

Fold work in half so that the decreased edges are together.  Using the starting tail, stitch the heel seam.  Using the ending tail, stitch the toe seam and the decreased edges.  Secure and weave in ends.

Using the contrasting yarn, make a chain approx. 18 inches long leaving a tail of about 6 inches at both ends.  Using a yarn needle or bodkin, thread it on to one of the tails and weave the chain through the ends of the rows at the ankle.  Stitch the pompoms to each end of the chain and tie the chain into a bow.

Make second slipper as first.

SANTAS SLIPPERS There has been an idea to knit some simple little slippers for the children...nicknamed at the moment Santas Slippers not that they are Red & White or look like "Santa" but we have time to knit and send some so they will become extras for the children at Christmas. This is the easiest pattern I can come up with that means you can knit a pair in an evening. It is based on our famous 8" square but with a little bit of shaping.

Using 6mm needles and two strands of Double Knit wool throughout.

Cast on 36 stitches leaving 10" of wool at the beginning that will be used to sew up the back of the slipper.

Work 22 rows in garter stitch as for a normal square.

RS facing K2 together K to last 2 stitches then K2 together. Continue in garter stitch and decrease 1 stitch at each end of row on every RS facing row till 16 stitches remain.

Break off yarn leaving a tail of about 12". Thread yarn onto wool sewing needle and gather the 16 stitches left on the 6mm knitting needle onto the yarn pull and gather stitches together this will form the toe. Do a couple of stitches to secure then sew up the two decreased edges to an inch within the top edge secure yarn and cut off. With the yarn left when casting on sew up the back of the slipper. I think this makes a slipper to fit a 6-8 size childs shoe but they are stretchy and will fit a larger size.

The top can be turned back to form a collared top and secured in place with a couple of stitches or can be left stood up to give a boot effect.

These can be decorated with buttons, bows or any other sort of motif that you have. If anyone has any other ideas for patterns for simple slippers knitted or crochet please us all know.

Leaving the top turned up creates a boot type slipper. Hopefully they will help keep a few more children warm.

I found a site that has a knitting pattern for slippers that is suited to beginners. The pattern reads very easy and the slippers are knitted on one pair of needles, not a set. They are done in garter stitch, and "Red Heart" yarn which many of you are familiar with (not me) is recommended. The site is http://www.aokcorral.com/projects/how2oct2005.htm  In the photo they just look like an oversized pair of baby bootees with a turn down cuff. Quite cute and I would think possibly quite quick to make.

Shirley any size yarn and needles will work so long as the finished dimensions of the square equal 8 inches in width and height (give or take an inch, it's not exact and the squares stretch to fit when being sewn up). Whatever needle size works with the yarn you have is perfect, believe me.  The point is to stop chill winds from reaching immune compromised little bodies so whatever makes up into a nice wind-stopping square is perfect!

I am new to the site,  and just want to clarify the basic square pattern pattern.  32 sts, 20cm square,  8ply knitting yarn and I was not sure if the needle size is 5 or 5.5 for the Australian size.  I am keen to start this weekend as I am away in the mountains, and I only have 5mm needles with me!!  Thank you. Shirley Green.

Hi Marion
I think your cuddle is smashing
Marion Donnenwirth Comment by Marion Donnenwirth on September 5, 2010 at 9:06am
I had some left-over wool and wanted to make a Cuddle, but I didn't have enough yarn to knit with double strands. So I knitted it singly, trying to make it a bit longer as requested, and lined it with flannel. (I used one leg of an old pair of flannel pjs.) It occurred to me that the lining might need washing more than the outside, so made it removable. I attached it with buttons around the top, between the lining and the wool exterior, so that the buttons wouldn't irritate the baby's skin.
Then I used the bits of wool that were still left to make baby and preemie hats.
If this is okay, let me know, because I have another pj leg and some yarn I found on sale that I can use to make another Cuddle like this one.

Yes i think you are right about using 4mm i tried both and 6mm make it very big so i am now using 4mm , much nicer
Sally Thomas Comment by Sally Thomas on July 24, 2010 at 2:07pm
Hi - i just read somewhere in the last few minutes that the needles need to be 6mm but i have always used 4mm with 8ply i have been knitting some of the squares and they are 20cm i think i used about 38 stitches ...6mm needles would make bigger stitches and the wool would not be as tightly knitted is that right???
