KAS South African ABC blanket

This was made using the Alphabet Crochet Squares found here: http://www.knit-a-square.com/free-crochet-patterns.html

Here are my tips for using the alphabet patterns:

1. Add one row of single crochet to the top and bottom of the pattern; otherwise it isn't quite square

2. If you find that your puff stitch isn't puffing out very much, change those instructions to "(yo, pull up a loop) 5 times, 11 loops on hook, yo, pull thru 10 loops, yo pull thru 2 loops, push puff to front of work, work next st."

3. If you're having a hard time pulling through the loops of the puff stitch, make sure you "yo, pull up a loop" LOOSELY.

4. I've found that these patterns make my hands/wrists/arms hurt, whether from the repetitive nature and small movements required for single crochets, or fighting with the puff stitches, so be aware of that, and work on a square with a different pattern or take a break if you need to.

5. If you're having a hard time figuring out how to read the graph, try downloading "Rachel's Heart Puff Crochet Square" and making that one first (I also included some of those heart squares in the blanket above). If you look closely at the picture on the page with that pattern, you will notice that I had to crochet around the fininshed square a few times to get it to the right size; it doesn't have to be perfect as long as it's warm =)! I wrote out the instructions for that square, along with including a graph. If you still can't figure out how to make the alphabet squares by just using the graph, let me know, and I can write out the instructions for each of the letters.

6. Let me know if you have any other questions/problems and I will be happy to try to help you =)!

Thanks, Jeanne!  I've tried to put the tips with every picture I post of this pattern, so it's a relief to know they are with the pattern now =)!

Fabulous Rachel and the tips are excellent.  I love the plastic yarn needles used to hold down the yarn tail on every square.  These will be SO welcomed over in South Africa!  Well done indeed! :D

What a gorgeous vibrant colour combo. I'm not a crocheter, but this looks like a lot of work. Well done! How special is the child who receives this going to feel, eh?
