Leftover Fabric Hats

These hats were made from fabric offcuts from my dressmaking projects: a fleecy farbic and a stretchy boucle. The patterns can be found on the Internet at the following websites: http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/507_8621.htm and http://www.nancysnotions.com/text/pdf/CKEasyHat.pdf

Thanks for the advice about the hat sizes Jeanne.  I would also add, when making hats using fleece, to allow extra for the bulk of the fabric.  My first hats came up smaller than I intended, even though I was aiming for a 22" hat circumference.  For anyone making the fleece hat, I made the strips 3" wide.  There are 8 of these strips, which comes to a total circumference of 24", but then you have to allow for the seams and by the time you add the band, the hat came out closer to 19-20" circumference.  Judgement is needed here, as the final size will depend on the type of fabric you use and how close you seam the edges.

Try to have some fun with this though - the aim is to add variety and enjoy what you are doing, as well as achieving a rewarding outcome.

Lovely squares and lovely hats.  Just remember ladies to make the hats teen to small adult size as fabric hats don't stretch and grow as knit or crochet ones do.  If one can whip up a fleece hat in 1/2 an hour I say power to you.  They are very popular in South Africa.  Love the squares too, really nice colors.

Lillian , thank you so much for these links-I have just printed out both patterns and will try them very soon. I was given some fleece a while ago that a friend had bought on Ebay by mistake( she says she has no idea how to hold a needle and has been known to staple up hems!) and these will be a great way to use it, especially since one of my resolutions was to do more sewing!

That's great Pam - I look forward to seeing the outcome and if anyone else uses the patterns, please put the photos up on the website so that we can see them.  It is such an inspiration to see the wonderful work of the KAS members.

Now that I know the fleece (and other material) hats will be welcome in South Africa, I will keep a look out for any fabric offcuts that I think will make a soft comfortable hat.  I hope one day to be able to see one of these hats on a lovely smiling African child.

I have just downloaded the patterns Lillian - thanks very much, they will be great for the material that I have.

These are all great Lillian - and I guess the child with the tasselled hat will be the envy of the others.  Fantastic!  I have two old fleecy dressing gowns  and knew they would have a use - just another project for the list- but thanks for the inspiration and pattern link.
