more January jewels
As a knitter I struggled with this challenge.- none of my squares seemed bright enough. Then I remembered a bag of small grannies I'd been making out of oddments for no particular purpose and decided to border them them with gold instead of the white I had in mind. They're very garish and much brighter than they look in the photo. The others are just experiments which is one of the great things about KAS; you can have a go without the feeling that you're wasting time.

Christine, these are marvellous ! A sign of a good crocheter is the ability to "wing it" and adjust accordingly.
I've done what I call ''diamond in a square' but not using the granny square so I don't know if that would help you or not. Here's the pattern link to give you some ideas.

Thank you ladies for all your kind comments. I actually had 31 'centres' for the gold edged ones so that was a big help. I need to ask one of you crochet experts how to crochet triangles onto a square (like the purple/white one in the centre). I couldn't find a youtube tutorial so I winged it but I then had to add extra clusters on each side because I had gaps. There has to be a better way.

What fantastic squares, Christine!I don't think they look garish at all, just bright and beautiful.I love the yellow/gold edging! I know what you mean, it is great fun experimenting and still producing something useful-I have been trying out all sorts of stitches which I probably wouldn't have done otherwise if I hadn't had a reason to.

What a jewel box! All I can say is your experiments were a success Professor. I love that blue/gold/black/red one and the gold bordered ones are super! So much loveliness to look at here...and every square warm and cheerful. They'll love opening this package in South Africa, trust me. I'm rather partial to that pink and grey one with the lavender center too. Mmmm...and the blues/greens one...and the stripey one...
