"Maybe the price rocketed because it weighed more than 2kg. The weight restriction on surface mail goes up to this weight then reverts to airmail. this would account for the high price. maybe.?"

Hello Brenda and welcome to our KAS community.

Thank you for joining us and for your contributions to the orphaned and vulnerable children.

To benefit from your membership, you should visit our guidelines: http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/categories/forum-guidelines/listForCategory, and to introduce yourself in ‘Meeting You!’ http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/categories/meeting-you/listForCategory

Here is a post that will touch your heart: http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/topics/thank-you-kas-from-the-bottom You may also like to start you own personal blog in which you can post your news, views and family stories and photos. http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/categories/members-personal-blogs/listForCategory

We run a challenge each month. For the next three months it is all about squares. We have a grand total of 55,900 squares we are trying to achieve and would love you to participate.

Don't forget to post photographs of your work. We have an awesome gallery of the work of the KAS community which is really inspiring.

Did you receive the latest ezine? If not you can view it here: http://www.knit-a-square.com/Square_Circle-backissues.html. Follow the blog: www.allfororphans.com for a different perspective on why we need to look out for these children. And for precise details about the project, visit www.knit-a-square.com

Some of our members further support KAS by making a small monthly donation through Paypal (top left hand corner). This is invaluable help as it ensures we can continue to ensure that your work is speedily distributed to the most needy children in South Africa. We are deeply grateful for any donation we receive, be it monetary or squares to help the orphans. Thank you.

Hi Brenda, funnily enough it's not me in any of the photos. I hate getting my picture taken.
The round thing is a hat loom. Sort of like a very big knitting nancy or french knitting bobbin. You wind the yarn round 3 times then bring the loops over the pegs. Really easy to use. When you have made enough length, you just theread the yarn tail through all the remaining loops and pull tight then sew it in securely. I really don't knit much - I don't enjoy it. Give me a hat loom or crochet hook any day.
Looms are available on the internet. You can also get them from HobbyCraft. Don't know if you are near one of those.
Please do ask any questions you like even if they seem silly. I only learnt to crochet last August and joined the forum in September. Since then it has grown so much that it must be difficult to navigate. Always plenty of us on hand to help though.
Best wishes
Jeni

Hi Brenda, the totals are for fun and motivation. No one has to tally what they do.

For those very organised people on the forum:

You can add your relevant tally to the current challenge, this can be found in the challenges folder on the main forum. Right now we are counting down on 55,900 squares.

You can add your efforts to a tally for your country if they run one. It's nice to see that we are making a great contribution together.

You can add your tally to the main forum count. Now that KAS has been going for a little longer, it helps to see how much more productive we are becoming.

Many people don't ever add to the tallies, sometimes you might just forget. It isn't a competition but it is nice to see our totals rising so please take part if you want to. But really - no pressure.

Welcome to the forum Brenda. Lovely to have another UK member. I hope you find us to be a useful and supportive group. There is a huge demand for squares from our sewing groups in SA so you have joined at just the right moment. just remember all squares are special so even if a few don't come out just as you want them, KAS will still be delighted to get them and they will keep the children just as warm.
