(by large gauge I mean the circle loom sets commonly found in department stores like Walmart)

Gwen you asked about what yarn to best use on a knitting loom?  I have fairly large gauge looms so when using them to make a hat I use two strands of knitting worsted (size 4) or one strand of chunky (size 5) on those looms. I've since discovered smaller gauge looms, right down to sock yarn sized....when I have a couple of months I'll tackle socks...yikes. The smaller gauge looms work great for sport weight yarn or DK weight yarn (size 3).  Hope this helps some?

Love,

Jeanne

Welcome to Knit A Square, Gwen a charity providing blankets, hand warmers, soft toys and hats to orphans and AIDS victim children throughout South Africa.   We are very glad to have you with us!  I am in the middle of Canada and we have the option of sea mail to post. J It takes 6 weeks or so but gets there just the same.  Check out our Groups area (see top of Square Circle page, far right) to find groups formed in your countries .  You can join as few or many groups as you wish and there are many good tips for posting to be found there, as well as fun get-togethers and knitting afternoons and other tidbits members share.  The photos section contains a small sampling of contributors’ items;  some of us have a dickens of a time uploading photos for some reason.  The Discussions section is large but check out the reports from South Africa and drop into Café KAS for a giggle if you want one, also there’s Postal Information there.  Again, welcome!  Ask questions freely and have fun sending your love and warmth to the children! (And check out the monthly challenges for interesting ideas of what to knit or crochet or loom knit along with other KASers)

Hi Gwen.

A warm welcome to Knit A Square from over here in Western Australia. It's great to see another Aussie join the forum.  :))

Knitting or crocheting an 8" square or two or possibly even a few is a wonderful gift for a vulnerable child in South Africa. The children love to receive their blankets, created from squares, which come from kindly, caring folk such as yourself, from over 60 countries all over our world. You are encouraged to knit/crochet in any stitch you prefer, but we do ask that they not be too 'lacy' as warmth is our highest priority. PJs (Plain Janes as they are affectionately known) are the backbone to all our blankets. These are single colour squares that are in garter stitch(knitting) or single crochet as they are very solid and provide a contrast to a picture/striped/patterned square or two that may be added to a blanket.By clicking on the KASpattern book tab at the top of the page you can also find lots of  patterns provided by our fellow KASers.  If you would kindly check out our wishlist for 2016, you can see what items we are currently focusing on.
