Welcome to KAS, Sylvia from across the Pond in Canada.  I know what you mean, my children rarely need new hats or scarves or mittens, the old ones wear so well and the last time one of them asked me for "colorful" slippers well she needed sunglasses to wear around them. I did have fun finding the brightest yarn on the planet though!  Your pullovers will be perfect for the kids over there as their chilly winter will be arriving as ours wanes.  Particularly the AIDS/HIV orphans need warm pullovers to cover their very thin clothes to keep them warm and help their immune systems.  Some kids over here in the more affluent countries love handmade and some don't and I agree lets send our work where its wanted, needed and treasured.  I still have a knitted Christmas vest my mother made me years ago.  She did threaten me with bodily harm if I ever asked her to make another one, but it's lovely to wear.  (you couldn't carry the colors and it was a charted design and she had lots of hanging balls of different colors and they were always tangling up on her--I can't imagine, as I'm a chicken and I crochet instead of knit) Anyways....enough nattering...your post is just fine, hon.

And now we’re helping out over in Zimbabwe too and they need everything over there.  I just love making a real difference in a child’s life.  So welcome aboard!

p.s. the vest pattern we now have is the right size...any jumper or vest will fit over the children's swollen little tummies provided it is 3-4 inches longer than it is wide. That's the  only rule of thumb. :)

Welcome to the forum. I know what you mean about children not wanting handknits these days - I have no grandchildren but my sons turned their noses up at handmade jumpers when they were very young, years ago. There does seem to be a bit of a change now - many teenage girls are wearing hats and, jumpers and scarves made from the new beatuiful yarns and there does seem a bit more interest among the young. My daughter-in-law asked me to teach her a couple of years ago and she's quite keen now so perhaps we'll come back into fashion. It is great to able make things for people who do appreciate it though and as you can see from the photos the orphans certainly do.

If you wish to join the UK group for more local chat and news (such as where to get yarn bargains etc) you'd be very welcome, or any other group/s that you fancy.
