Jumpers for school age children?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Elaine Jones Oct 11, 2011. 1 Reply

Did I see somewhere on KAS recently that larger jumpers are needed? I found a pattern in a Feed the Children booklet for school uniform jumpers (so children are ABLE to attend school). I've started…Continue

Hello Anne, thanks so much for sharing the fundraising info - I'll make a note for the future.  At the moment KAS is only a registered charity in Australia and most of these type of things will not support overseas charities.  I will research more.  We eventually hope to get KAS registered in the UK, but we cannot do that until the accounts are certified in Oz.  Please keep an eye out for any other ideas as I've created a file.  Have also listed everyclick.com.  It would lovely to get more financial support, I'd particularly like KAS to pay Sandy a small stipend to enable her to be back on the forum more often - we do miss her vibrant leadership.  Take care.

Hi Anne, yes I know exactly what you mean but there's no harm in just making some enquiries.  If it seems likely it's going to be too expensive and/or time consuming, we don't have to proceed.

Hi Anne,  Sorry to be so long coming back to you - it's been a bit hectic lately.  However, just had lunch with Pam Johnson so feeling a bit more relaxed.  I think it's well worthwhile finding out what their policy is with regard to charities and I'm sure Carol will be able to give us some pointers with regard to insurance/electrical items etc. because I imagine all the events have similar rules.  I haven't talked to Pam about this yet but we might be able to persuade her to join us and - just possibly - Pam Antink as well.  Her brother lives in Leominster, which is not a million miles away.  It will be easier to communicate if we become "friends" so I'll do an invitation.

Anne,  I'm leaving this here because there have been so many comments on the UK forum since you asked me the question that my answer may get lost.  Sorry for the delay but I've been having some communication problems - no electricity!  I've never been to the Wonderwool Wales event although I have heard of it.  It would be a terrific venue for a KAS stand although I have to confess that I am a little put off by all the rules and regulations.  One would hope that they might not charge a fee for a charity stand but there is still the question of 3rd party liability insurance and the need to get any electrical items (e.g. a kettle) certified as safe by a qualified electrician.  All quite costly I think?  I have no experience of this kind of thing but I'm always keen to learn!

Anne: Thank you for suggesting The Knitting Circle.  It's funny you should mention it, because I got into knitting, then crochet, last summer after my eldest son died at age 28.  The yarn work really helped me then, and still does.  Its simplicity, the fact that knitting keeps the hands busy without over-soliciting the mind, the creative nature of it, all comforted me and helped me to cope.  I think it might be too soon to read this particular book, but someday...

I'm relieved it worked. The reason I didn't give details of the stocking stitch background one are that because you need a garter stitch border to stop it curling, and the heart has the same amount of stitches (23) as the one you've made, one must need to have more stitches overall. The first ones I made were from some wool I had which was a reasonable thickness but not aran and I believe I cast on about 39 stitches, probably on 4mm needles. Also the heart motif is in double moss stitch but that's probably not esssential. I haven't been back to that pattern because I have sort of got stuck making them in thicker yarns. I hope it works out for you.

That's good. After all that I forgot to say that I used 5mm needles but I expect you could work that out for yourself.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi christine

have had a look at your pattern, have wondered for a while how to do the heart square and just to say it has printed out fine for me. Thanks, will let you know how the actual knitting goes!
