P. Jeanne Haessler said… Welcome to KAS, Imogen from across the Pond in Canada. Sorry I can't help with the knitting, I crochet. Sorry I'm late with the welcome...my Inbox got away from me and I was feeling poorly for abit. I have "fun" getting the squares exactly 8 inches too. 7-9 inches generally will fit into a blanket, as knit is rather stretchy. I try for 7 1/2 to 8 1/2. I suppose you could knit a few rows around the outside of the square, that'd be interesting challenge eh? Anyways, I find KAS such a rewarding cause to be involved in and I hope you enjoy it too. Hi Imogen and welcome to KAS. I have great sympathy with you. My tension is rubbish, so I stick to jumpers and hats. When you find your way round the forum you will find you are not alone.
There are 3 areas which I have found that can create problems with squares:
1. Double knitting wool is not always the same thickness so you may need more or less stitches. As Christine says in this instance try about 5 or 6.
2. Size of needles. For double knitting I use 4mm.
3. Tension
If all else fails try crochet. I am having lessons at the moment and although I still have the tension problem I find it easier to get the 8". U tube are good for these, if you google - How to crochet..........whatever there will be a video.
Best of luck, and happy knitting. Barbara
